"The Red Sox never have been shy about adding starting pitching depth, as the
John Smoltz and Brad Penny signings in 2009 illustrate.

Although neither of those panned out, here's a name to remember when free
agency dawns -- Brandon Webb.

The former NL Cy Young Award winner has missed most of the last two seasons
while recovering from shoulder surgery. Yesterday at Arizona's Chase Field in
Phoenix, he threw an Instructional League game in front of scouts from 21
teams, including the Red Sox, according to a source there.

The Sox' presence should not necessarily be read as interest, at least not yet,
since they'd have scouting coverage of the Instructional League even if Webb
wasn't there. But he's an intriguing case."
