CLEVELAND -- Though Monday night's 3-2 loss to the Indians was one of the
toughest of the season for the Red Sox, there was one piece of good news.
Dustin Pedroia was not seriously injured after leaving the game in the top of
the eighth with discomfort in his left leg.
Pedroia stumbled over the second-base bag on a single to right by Adrian
Gonzalez. The discomfort did not subside quick enough for Pedroia to stay in
the game.
By the time the contest ended, Pedroia seemed fine.
"He's OK," said manager Terry Francona. "He went past second and he slipped
on the bag and turned his ankle and got that zinger, kind of like he did in
Anaheim. He kind of had some numbness going up in his leg a little bit. I
think, just being prudent, we got him out of there. He's OK. He came in a
minute ago and said he's fine. I think because of what happened to him in the
past we all probably hold our breath a little bit when it happened, but he's
OK."
Pedroia fractured the navicular bone in his left foot last June, and he had a
surgical procedure in late August, at which point a pin was inserted to
promote stability and healing.
The ongoing presence of the pin could make Pedroia more susceptible to
turning his ankle.
"I must have hit a nerve that shoots that 'stinger' feeling up the leg," said
Pedroia. "Just wait 'till the end of the year and take that [pin] out. I
don't know where it's bumping, but it's happened twice. The first time it
happened, I got the feeling back pretty quick and I was good to go. That's
basically it."
If Pedroia had still been on base at the time, he probably could have stayed
in the game. But it took the sensation about five minutes to stop.
"It was similar to what I did in Anaheim," Pedroia said. "When I do something
like that, it's kind of like a 'stinger' like you get in football, so my leg
took a little bit of a while to get the feeling back into it. I was already
off the field [when the feeling came back], so it [stinks], man. Anaheim was
perfect -- I got the feeling back in a minute. I took five this time. I can't
hold up the game that long."
Pedroia won't start Tuesday night's game, but only because Francona had
already scheduled that day off ahead of time. The second baseman should be
back in there on Wednesday afternoon.
"I'm a little beat up, I have to manage some things, but I'll be back in
there the next day," Pedroia said. "Maybe [I'll] pinch-hit. Who knows? I've
got good pinch-hit numbers."
