NEW YORK -- The exam on Dustin Pedroia's knee showed that the Red Sox
second baseman is suffering from a bruised kneecap that won't require
surgery.

"I fully expect him to be batting second tomorrow," said manager Terry
Francona. "I don't think he's going to miss any time."

Francona said the problem predates the collision several weeks ago that
Pedroia mentioned on Wednesday.

"It was actually sore last year," said Francona, "and it's been nagging at
him a lot this year. What we're trying to do is reassure us and Pedey that
he can play without making it worse."

When asked why the team did the test now -- considering that the Sox had
an off-day last Monday and will have another next month -- Francona
replied: "He complained about it."
