BOSTON -- Right-hander Scott Atchison has cleared waivers and has been
outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket.
He was designated for assignment on Jan. 26 to make room on the 40-man roster
for outfielder Cody Ross.
Atchison, who turns 36 on March 29, has been up and down between Pawtucket
and Boston for most of the last two seasons. He has made 60 appearances for
the Red Sox, with one start, posting a record of 3-3 with a 4.08 ERA. In two
seasons with the PawSox, he made 47 appearances, one start, with a combined
record of 7-2 and an ERA of 2.89.
This is the first season he is out of options, meaning that if he makes the
Red Sox, he'll have to clear waivers if the team wants to demote him to
Triple-A.
Atchison could have declined the assignment to Pawtucket, electing free
agency instead, but general manager Ben Cherington said (via e-mail) that he
accepted the assignment.
Atchison will be invited to big league camp.
