Carpenter, 27, is 1-5 with a 5.70 ERA in 67 appearances over the last two years with the Astros and Blue Jays, along with 60 strikeouts and 29 walks in 60 innings. The right-hander was selected as a catcher in the 12th round of the 2006 draft by the Cardinals, who converted him to relief. He was traded to the Astros in 2010 in exchange for Pedro Feliz. This summer, he went from Houston to Toronto as part of a 10-person trade between the two clubs.
