Bogar's time with Red Sox comes to an end

BOSTON -- Tim Bogar's four-year tenure as a coach for the Red Sox has ended,
MLB.com has confirmed. The team informed Bogar of the decision not to retain
him on Thursday.

Torey Lovullo will soon be announced as Boston's new bench coach under
manager John Farrell.

Bogar was the bench coach under Bobby Valentine in 2012, but it was no secret
that their relationship deteriorated rapidly. Valentine felt that some of his
coaches undermined him, likely including Bogar in that mix. Meanwhile, Bogar
felt that Valentine shut him and some of the other coaches out of the loop of
communication.

Well respected for his knowledge of the game and attention to detail, Bogar
was Boston's first-base coach in 2009 under manager Terry Francona before
moving to the third-base box for two seasons. He was also the team's infield
instructor those first three years.

The Red Sox could have close to a full makeover of their coaching staff.
Hitting coach Dave Magadan has already left for the Rangers, so the Red Sox
certainly have that vacancy to fill, and they need a new pitching coach.

Jerry Royster and Alex Ochoa coached third and first, respectively, under
Valentine last season; there's no word yet as to whether they'll be retained.

The member of last year's staff with the strongest chance of returning is
bullpen coach Gary Tuck, who is renowned for his work as a catching
instructor.
