According to Matt Eddy of Baseball America (via Twitter), the Red Sox signed
30-year-old outfielder Mitch Maier to a minor league contract. Maier averaged
122 big league games in 2009-10 while posting a .254/.333/.354/.688 line
during those two seasons with the Royals. However, he's played just 77 big
league games over the last two years.
A 2003 first-round pick by the Royals (at a time when current VP of player
personnel Allard Baird was the Kansas City GM), Maier can play all three
outfield positions. The left-handed hitting Maier seemingly represents a
minor league depth option at a time when the Sox have just one known starter
(Jacoby Ellsbury) for their 2013 big league outfield.
