Did Boston err in not tendering a qualifying offer to Cody Ross?

紅襪沒提Qualifying Offer給Cody Ross，是不是犯下大錯了？

Shortly after the season ended, Boston had the opportunity to tender Ross a
contract of $13.3 million for the 2013 season. Only by tendering a qualifying
offer would the Red Sox have been able to recoup a draft pick upon his
departure — a pick that likely would have been in the back half of the first
round of next June’s draft.

紅襪有機會丟一張$13.3M的QO給他─這樣才有希望撈一個選秀權回來，而且很有可能會
吃掉第一輪後半段的籤。

Had Ross accepted the qualifying offer, it would be Ross and not Shane
Victorino penciled into the Opening Day lineup in right field at the moment.
Ross over Victorino would represent a minor offensive upgrade, probably, but
a minor defensive and baserunning downgrade.

如果Cody Ross接受QO，那麼咱們開季時就會看到Cody Ross守右外野，而不是Shane
Victorino。Cody Ross跟Victorino相比，火力稍優(或許吧)，防守和跑壘稍差。

With Ross not being a center fielder like Victorino, that scenario probably
would have closed the door on any thoughts of trading Jacoby Ellsbury. Then
again, had he accepted the qualifying offer, Ross also would not have
required the three-year commitment the Red Sox gave Victorino.

因為Ross沒辦法像Victorino那樣守中外野，關於交易Jacoby Ellsbury的傳言就會消失。
然後，如果Cody Ross接受QO，他就拿不到三年約。

Had Ross declined the qualifying offer, he would have been out on the
free-agent market with draft-pick compensation latched to his ankle like a
ball and chain. Maybe he would have accepted even less than $13 million per
season to return to Boston in order to get a multiyear deal. Maybe, however,
he’d have signed elsewhere — and Boston would have received an extra draft
pick and the extra $1 million or so in its Major League Baseball-permitted
signing-bonus pool that comes with it.

如果Cody Ross拒絕QO，他就會進入FA市場─而且因為補償選秀權的關係，Cody Ross的腳
踝會被扣住，成為他的一大負擔。或許Cody Ross會為了簽下複數年合約而接受年均低於

Ross didn’t get $13 million annually or anything close to it. According to
multiple reports, Ross agreed Saturday to a three-year, $26-million contract
with the Arizona Diamondbacks. But Boston was willing to pay $13 million per
year to Victorino. Detroit was willing to pay $13 million a year to Torii
Hunter. San Francisco was willing to pay $10 million a year to Angel Pagan.
It might have been worth the overpay to Ross in order to keep the deal to one
year rather than extending to three with Victorino.

Ross並沒有獲得年均$13M的約─事實上差很多。據說Ross和小蛇簽下三年$26M的約；而
紅襪開了年均$13M的約給Victorino、老虎也開了$13M給Torii Hunter；巨人則是砸了
$10M給Angel Pagan。所以為了拿下Cody Ross的一年合約，這樣的overpay還算值得─
比Victorino的三年還值得。

Ben Cherington said at the general managers’ meetings in early November that
teams were less aggressive with qualifying offers than he expected they would
be. He might not have been talking about himself at that moment. He might,
however, be regretting having not been aggressive with a qualifying offer to
Ross.

Ben Cherington表示之前的GM會議上其他球隊對於QO的積極度比他預期的低很多，但是他
好像沒談到自己如何。或許他會因為沒給Cody Ross一份QO而感到後悔。
