This year, Barnes is off to a difficult start. He lasted just one inning in
his first outing of the year, and his pitch count got elevated to 33 — thus
requiring him to be pulled from the game. His second outing on Sunday went
little better. After a sharp first couple of innings in which he worked
around a pair of singles, he suffered a five-run fifth inning. He wasn’t
getting hit all over the park — all four hits permitted by Barnes in the
frame were singles (including one of the infield variety), but he also walked 
a pair of hitters and hit another before getting yanked after just 2 1/3 
innings. In that time, he required 59 pitches (36 strikes) to labor through
his outing.

His stuff? Not up to the standards he set last year, either in terms of
velocity (he pitched at 91-94 mph on Sunday, mostly at the lower end of that 
spectrum) or sharpness. Whereas Barnes was relentless and overpowering with
precise execution at the start of 2012 in a fashion that permitted him
considerable efficiency last year, thus far this season, he has yet to be
able to put away opponents. Thus, through two — worth emphasizing the
brevity of the sample: TWO — starts, his pitch count is getting elevated
with disappointing results.

From Barnes’ vantage point, that’s undoubtedly less than ideal, but in
another way, there’s something to be said for starting the year in a fashion
that does not engender irrational expectations. He’s off to a start that
offers motivation to work, in an environment where he can do so without a
spotlight.

While his stuff hasn’t been as impressive to start the year as it was in
spring training, he remains a pitcher who this spring mixed a 91-95 mph
fastball, with a changeup and curveball that showed improvement from a year
ago. It’s a bad start, but not something that would erode Barnes’ prospect 
standing as a likely and easily projectable future big league starter.
