LAS VEGAS (TICKER) —The Cincinnati Reds acquired catcher Ramon Hernandez from
the Baltimore Orioles for utility man Ryan Freel and two prospects Tuesday.

Hernandez, 32, batted .257 with 15 homers and 65 RBI last season, his third
with the Orioles.

A 10-year veteran, Hernandez has one season remaining on the four-year, $27.5
million deal he signed with Baltimore prior to the 2006 campaign.

Although he has been plagued by various injuries over the last two seasons,
Hernandez certainly constitutes a catching upgrade for the Reds, who primarily
used journeymen Paul Bako, Javier Valentin and David Ross at the position last
year.

"Ramon was a perfect fit for our club because he provides good leadership,"
 Reds president of baseball operations Walt Jocketty said. "He provides good
defense, handles a staff well and will give us a good offense, and in our park,
we think he'll have a very good year."

Hernandez is a career .263 hitter with 137 home runs and 602 RBI in 1,118 games
with Baltimore, San Diego and Oakland. The Orioles made the deal to get a
better look at catcher Matt Wieters, one of the top prospects in baseball.

"This trade was more about Matt Wieters, frankly," Orioles president of
baseball operations Andy MacPhail said. "It's been our goal to try to
familiarize yourself with Matt - he was Baseball America's Prospect of the Year.
He's really had an outstanding year for us in his first professional season
between (Class) A Ball and AA.”

MacPhail said Wieters would begin the 2009 season in Class AAA and could join
the parent club at some point.

"We knew that that would create a situation where we were going to have to
split some playing time with him and Ramon, and we knew Ramon wouldn't be happy
about that,”MacPhail said.

Freel, 32, batted .298 last year before undergoing season-ending surgery on his
hamstring in July. A speedster capable of playing several positions, Freel has
batted .272 in seven seasons with the Reds.

Cincinnati also acquired minor-league infielders Brandon Waring and Justin
Turner in the deal.
