Rockets one and done again: Who they are and where they're going

As I ran from the Rockets locker room to the interview room, rushing to get
there before Tracy McGrady spoke and the night's last newspaper deadline
passed, Rockets CEO Tad Brown and I had to stop for just a moment.

We said a few words, not having time for more, then told each other the same
thing:

But this team, this season, seems different than many of the 10 before it
that also ended with the Rockets unable to get past the first round. Maybe
that's why it will be an even longer wait for another to begin.

The Rockets changed this season.

火箭今年變了。

They were not the same team that was eliminated by the Jazz in the first
round last year, or by the Mavericks two years earlier, collapsing in
different ways in both series.

他們不再是那支去年第一輪被爵士淘汰的火箭，也不再是當年第七戰慘敗給小牛的球隊。

They are not complete, even with Yao Ming back and even if he returns to the
uninterrupted good health of his first three NBA seasons. There is work to be
done, and we'll get into that, a lot of that in the next few days. For a
start, though, (and this is just the jumping off point of these 
considerations) they need a scorer off the bench, someone with some size and
offensive skills, the sort of thing they once hoped to get from Bonzi Wells,
but with a better shot and greater commitment.

當然，火箭仍然不夠完整，即使姚明能健康的歸隊，即使姚明能回到他NBA生涯前三年

But first, the Rockets must decide what they've got. And for whatever they
lack, they added something they had to have.

They are tough. They fight. They fight hard and long.

This is a team that broke down physically against Dallas and mentally and
emotionally last season against the Jazz. When the Jazz hit them with runs in
Utah last season, the Rockets did not respond the way this team did.

All that could be fragile. The fortitude Tracy McGrady demonstrated might not
be as strong in different circumstances, but it seems wrong to hit him with
the 0-for-7 thing today.

一切都有可能變的脆弱。T-mac也許沒辦法在任何情況下都一樣堅強，但拿季後賽第一輪
七次被淘汰來苛責他，這是不對的！   

For whatever he did or could not do — and heading toward the 30-something
part of his career he does need to regain his shot — he did all he could,
which was what this team became about.

This time when the season ended, there was reason for hope.

You can add pieces, and the Rockets absolutely must. You can make trades and
sign free agents. If you don't have heart, you have nothing.

那顆強韌的心，那什麼洨都不是。

"I thought we never had a bunch of guys who played harder, even the
championship teams," Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said. "They never played
harder than these guys."

  火箭老闆 Leslie Alexander說。

They built something this season.

By the third quarter, the guy sitting next to me on Friday, a long time NBA
executive who was just there to watch, turned and said, "They're going to be
really good.

"They play hard, really hard. They play for each other. It looks like they
care about each other. And Rick's got them."

They do believe in their coach, Rick Adelman.

There is something here. They did win 22 in a row, the first 12 with Yao, and
had won 16 consecutive games that Yao played. The last loss before the streak
was with Yao out with a respiratory infection, and in what now seems an omen,
it came to the Jazz. They did win 55 games in a season that McGrady missed 16
and Yao missed 37. They did finally have some rookies with potential to grow
into valuable pieces.

看看這個球季，火箭創下NBA史上第二長的22連勝，起初的12連勝姚明還在球隊，姚明
出賽的場次還曾創下16連勝。他們在22連勝之前輸的最後一場比賽是姚明因上呼吸道感染
而缺賽，現在看起來就像是季後賽失利的預兆，那場比賽就是輸給爵士。火箭今年例行賽
拿下55勝，這還是在T-mac缺賽16場、姚明缺賽37場的情況之下。這隻球隊也找到幾名
很有潛力的菜鳥，他們將會逐漸成長，成為球隊不可或缺的一部份。


They have to get more help. Adding Yao is not enough. And if McGrady and Yao
can never be healthy, forget it.

火箭還需要更多的支援，光是姚明歸隊是不夠的。如果T-mac和姚明永遠都沒辦法保持健
康，那什麼鳥都不用講了。

But the feeling is that there is something here. It's worth building again on
that Yao/McGrady foundation.

再次以姚明和T-mac為基礎來打造完整的陣容是值得的。

It seems different, better now than it did a year ago. There's a lot of work
to be done, but there really might be something to build upon.

儘管都是第一輪被淘汰，但今年看起來真的很不一樣。火箭還有很多功課得作，但
有些東西得先去完成。

Still, it would have be nice to see this last longer.

看到火箭持續保持這樣的韌性是很棒的。
