The NBA and stupidity are more than passing acquaintances. One man's stupidity
compelled the NBA to enact the Ted Stepien Rule so that no franchise could
self-destruct by trading future first-round draft choices in successive years.
Stupid is as Isiah Thomas did and did to the New York Knicks until marginally
less-stupid heads finally prevailed.

pick Thursday night at the NBA draft. Maybe somebody will make a no-pain,
high-gain offer that Rockets general manager Daryl Morey and coach Rick Adelman
cannot refuse.

History takes a harsh view of the Rockets' draft position. In the past 40

Gerald Wallace (2001). Another No. 25 pick, Bob Gross, started on Portland's
1977 championship team and averaged 8.2 points in 513 NBA games.

beat the odds. In his first draft, he found a potential keeper in Aaron Brooks

Lewis, Carlos Boozer, Josh Howard, Mehmet Okur, Luis Scola, Cuttino Mobley,

Need more than a gem

Even if Morey can unearth a similar gem — if he can size up the future of
Nicolas Batum vs. Mario Chalmers vs. Chris Douglas-Roberts vs. Ante Tomic vs.
Serge Ibaka vs. J.J. Hickson — he can't single-handedly wheel and deal the
Rockets into title contention. Unless the Rockets abruptly abandon their plan
to build around Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady, they'll have to make many of their
improvements in subtle ways. Unsexy ways.
就算Morey能挖出一塊寶石——假如他能準確判斷出Batum、Chalmers、CDR、Tomic、Ibaka

looking for. We've looking to add pieces, but we're looking for growth, too,
from the guys we have."

There's no reason McGrady can't improve his ridiculously substandard free-throw
shooting, which in turn might make him a little less hesitant to draw contact
and get fouled. Yao can be more forceful about punishing teams that try to go
small against the Rockets. Shane Battier can find an extra basket here or there
each game on a backdoor cut or a drive to the basket.

start making the shots in games that he did in practice, because his ability to
blow past defenders won't count for much if he keeps shooting only 41 percent.

wouldn't be yet another championship banner to hang in Boston.
