Rockets release backup center Woods, sign Greene
Top draft pick scores 40 points in Summer League debut

While one Rockets career ended on Monday, another began.

The Rockets agreed to release center Loren Woods from his contract on Monday,
then signed this season’s first-round pick Donte Greene before their first
game in the Las Vegas NBA Summer League on Monday.

Greene had 40 points, making 12 of 20 shots and 11 of 12 free throws, to lead
the Rockets to a 100-97 win over the Phoenix Suns, as the Rockets came back
from a 17-point, second-half deficit. Mike Harris added 21 points and 13
rebounds. Maarty Leunen had 16, with a reverse with seven seconds left that
gave the Rockets their first lead of the game.

Greene signed his contract five minutes before the game. Joey Dorsey,
however, sat out, pending negotiations on his contract, though Rockets
general manager Daryl Morey said he offered to purchase double the usual
insurance.

Morey added Monday’s moves will not be the last, saying he planned a “minor
” trade for this month.

"There is definitely going to be a roster management move,” Morey said,
"probably in the next two weeks.”

Steve Novak, who played in the past two summer league teams, is not
participating this season, indicating he might not be in the Rockets plans
though they extending his contract last season.

Woods, who had been signed late last season to a partially-guaranteed
contract for next season, had been receiving interest from several European
teams and asked for his release.

“We’re finding out the final details of his situation, but it looks 100
percent he’s got a significant deal in Europe,” Morey said. “We don’t
want to hold him back.”

The Rockets had been considering him as a potential backup for Yao Ming,
particularly if they are unable to sign free agent Dikembe Mutombo.

Woods began last season playing for Efes (Turkey) Pilson and played in seven
games with the Rockets late in the season, his sixth in the NBA. He averaged
2.6 points and 3.2 rebounds in 215 career games.

He was replaced on the summer league roster by Chris Daniels, the former
Texas A&M Corpus Christi center. Daniels, the Southland Conference Player of
the Year, is known for his shooting touch, but went undrafted last month.

Though Daniels will be given a look in this week’s summer league games,
unlike Woods Daniels is not expected to be a fall-back plan if the Rockets
cannot sign Mutombo.

Mutombo said last month that he had decision to “consider” playing again,
indicating it would depend on contract negotiations. The Rockets, however,
seem likely to offer only the veteran’s minimum contract, worth about $1.2
million, Mutombo signed last season.

“Dikembe is still in our plan,” Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said.

Mutombo’s agent, David Falk, was not available for comment.

While the Rockets offered Woods his official Letter of Release, they
completed the contract for Greene, though the signing of first-round picks to
rookie contracts are largely formalities, with the first two seasons
guaranteed followed by two one-year options, and dictated by a salary scale
set in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The Rockets acquired Greene, the 28th pick of the draft last month, and a
second-round pick next season for Darrell Arthur, whom they acquired from the
Portland Trail Blazers for Nicolas Batum, the Rockets’ pick with the 25th
pick of the draft.

Greene, 6-9, 222, led Syracuse and was fourth in the Big East with an average
of 17.7 points per game last season.
