Rockets offer pick-me-up
Players, many in organization distribute items to victims of Ike

The cars kept pouring through the parking lot like an endless layup line, and
to the Rockets, who were loading trunks and backseats with food, ice and other
necessities, lending a helping hand was a slam-dunk decision.
卡車排了很長的隊，一輛接一輛，物資也被不斷的運出來。這裡有世界上最
昂貴的搬運工—休斯頓火箭的隊員們，他們臨時決定來這裡做些慈善的活動

“It means a lot to me,” guard Rafer Alston said. “I understand the situation
that the city is in. I think there’s a dire need right now for us to give
back. So I rushed over here as fast as I could to help.”

A handful of Rockets players and dozens of members of the organization teamed
up with Feed the Children to hand out food and toiletry items at the POD (point
of distribution) on the University of Houston campus Thursday.

“This neighborhood reminds me of my neighborhood back in New York,” Alston
said. “So I can relate to the people who grew up around here, for one. Also,
they get a chance to see us live and in the flesh out here helping, just like
ordinary people.”

Forward Mike Harris cracked jokes as he hoisted cases of orange juice into
trunk after trunk. Guard Aaron Brooks, the smallest member of the team, worked
feverishly loading boxes of supplies.
前鋒小哈從卡車裡搬運柳橙汁的時候一直在搞笑，小AB—團隊中個子最小的

Brooks had hunkered down during the storm inside the Toyota Center, getting in
a few workouts before and after Hurricane Ike struck. He lost a few shingles
from his roof and had his backyard fence fall down in the storm, but he counted
himself fortunate to be able to help some who lost more.

“From the time I’ve been here, it’s just good to see a smile on their faces,

time of devastation. It’s just good to give back.”

Chuck Hayes had considered riding out the hurricane, but he changed his mind at
the last minute and spent the weekend in San Antonio.

“I don’t think (the Utah Jazz) did this much to us,” he said. “They set us
back, but we fought back a little bit. (Thursday) I was caught in the line of
traffic over on Scott Street, and I was surprised at the number of people who
needed assistance. It’s great that the Rockets have done this and that UH has
provided the facilities to put this together. People need it.

From 9:30 a.m. through noon, an estimated 8,000 people had received food, ice
and goods at the POD in the west parking lot at Robertson Stadium, and the line
of pedestrians and cars still snaked for more than half a mile

Rockets owner Leslie Alexander had purchased three trailer loads of food and
goods to be distributed along with the FEMA supplies.

“We’ve worked with this group, Feed the Children, in the past with Hurricane
Rita, Hurricane Katrina and also the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation,” said Rockets
CEO Tad Brown. “We wanted to make sure we got them here, got the goods that we
could distribute and bring some help and hope to the people who right now are
going through some tough times.

“I know they not only provide support as volunteers, but they’re going to

pretty cool.’ Just shake a hand, give somebody a smile.
