Brooks scores 43 points as Rockets survive 50-foot buzzer-beater

Trevor Ariza bent over, hands on his thighs, as if trying to hold himself up.
Aaron Brooks, barely moving at all, made his way over, and Ariza draped his
left arm across Brooks’ shoulder. Together, they slowly walked to the exit.

The Rockets had been trapped in a game as long as any in franchise history and
longer than any of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ 1,648 previous games. The
Rockets had seen a 19-point first-half lead erased, Corey Brewer hit a running
50-footer to force the first overtime, and Wayne Ellington sink a 3-pointer to
force a third one.

had taken the one surge the Timberwolves could not answer to forge a 120-114
victory in three overtimes Wednesday night at Toyota Center.

But with the Timberwolves forced to foul again, Adelman had opted for the far

Minnesota center Al Jefferson, who was limited to six points through three
quarters but finished with 26 points and a franchise-record 26 rebounds, missed

before he could finally lumber off the court.

When they finally left the floor, Chuck Hayes had career highs of 17 rebounds
and six assists to go with 10 points and a season-high four steals, Shane
Battier had a season-high 12 rebounds to go with 14 points and five blocked
shots, and Brooks had scored 10 more points than any other Rockets player this
season. The three-overtime game was the Rockets’ first since a 123-121 victory
over Atlanta in February 2004, also taken on the back end of a back-to-back
after a loss.

had been the pattern through much of the game. Brooks had hit a corner
3-pointer before Jefferson scored on a drive, drawing Hayes’ sixth foul.
