While Aaron Brooks is the latest undersized guard to lead the Rockets'
offense, the original and best small guard in franchise history said Brooks
can be even better than he was — as a point guard.

As a shooting guard, Hall of Famer Calvin Murphy said there is no point in
comparison. But he believed Brooks can be a “great point guard,” if the
Rockets decide that's what they want him to be.

“I don't think it's fair to him to put in a classification with me,” Murphy
said. “That's not ego talking. I came in as point guard. Because of my
ability to finish, I was moved to a two-guard. He has ability to be both.
When they determine which, I would put him in anybody's class, mine, Nate
Archibald's, anybody.
「拿A.Brooks來和我比較對他來說很不公平，」 Murphy說。
「這不是我在豪洨，我當年可是打控衛起家的。因為我的finish能力很好，所以我後來也

“I think he will be a great point guard. I was a real good point guard. I
could never be a great point guard. My position was ‘put the ball in the
basket.' I was most comfortable with shooting. This young man can go anywhere
he wants to go if they realize where they want him to be and help him work on
it.”
「我覺得一哥會真的成為控衛一哥。我當年真的是個不錯的控球後衛，但絕對不是偉大的

If Brooks remains a scorer, Murphy said he can improve there, too. The next
step Murphy suggests — as Rockets coach Rick Adelman has often said — is to
add more mid-range scoring.
就算Brooks打算成為一個自幹王，Murphy也認為Brooks能成為得分一哥。接下來Murphy
給了一個Adelman也常提到的建議，就是Brooks要多投一點中距離。
“My game was predicated on middle distance,” Murphy said. “Now, everybody
shoots the long ball. ... Once Aaron Brooks has that (middle distance)
mentality and that game, it will be hell of a day to guard him.

「現在每個人卻都SBL化，只想幹三分球...唉....假如Aaron Brooks真的把中距離練起來，
那要防守他簡直是地獄般的痛苦。」
“I would back off and give him all outside shots he wants. If he plays
middle distance, there would be nothing you could do. He has great timing
against a defense. By the time you do something, he's doing something else.”
Murphy enjoys seeing potential successors.
“(Brooks) has all the tools to be one of the great ones, not a superstar,
but a great player for the Rockets,” Murphy said.
