翻這篇只是偶然喵到,但是後來發現Clutch已做了14年,讓我對他肅然起敬!!!



Dependable in the Clutch
Rockets’ mascot has fun, but sometimes faces unruly fans


   When Robert Boudwin starts his day at work, he follows some important rules:
Don't talk. Instead use exaggerated gestures to express emotion. Never be
seen by customers out of uniform. And never flip a middle finger at people,
even if they punch you in the face.

   When the 35-year-old climbs into his uniform — which consists of a furry
suit, giant shoes and a big bear head — he becomes Clutch, the Houston
Rockets' beloved mascot bear who runs frantically around Toyota Center,
glad-handing and doing tricks at each home game.

   當35歲的他穿上大頭,毛茸茸的身體,跟鞋子,他就變身成為火箭球迷最愛的吉祥物
Clutch.

   It may be some kids' dream job, but it's not all fun and games in that
stifling, 19-pound bear suit.

 “It can be a lot of work, more than people realize,” Boudwin said.

   這可能是很多小孩的夢想工作,不過實際上19磅的重量加上悶熱的的環境,其實不是一
般人所想的

    Boudwin, who has worked as Clutch for about 14 years, has puked in costume
and occasionally fends off drunken fans intent on assaulting him. He's also
suffered a range of injuries, including a broken nose after he fell flat on
his face. Still, the show had to go on.

    Boudwin幹了14年. 曾經吐在布偶中,偶爾還要防止酒醉球迷的攻擊. 他身上也有大
大小小的傷,包括摔掉鼻子. 不過,依舊工作

Few can be one
    Becoming a professional mascot is no easy task. Indeed, only a few hundred
people nationwide have parlayed their skills into jobs with minor or major
league sports teams.

    成為職業球隊的吉祥物並不簡單,只有少數人能成功

    Though Boudwin harbored dreams of becoming a lawyer or accountant, the
Philadelphia native started performing as the University of Delaware's mascot
— a big blue hen named YoUDee — as an undergraduate.

    When the Rockets advertised for a new mascot, he applied and got the job.

    Boudwin has since made Houston his home, only missing two games since 1995,
both times with a severe case of pneumonia.

    But there's more to Clutch than Rockets games. Boudwin has an intense
schedule of birthday parties and school appearances organized by the team's
mascot coordinator Dominic Davila.

    Another of Davila's jobs: Helping run off anyone who wants to attack Clutch.

   “People sometimes forget there's a real person inside,” Davila said.

    Two more assistants help Boudwin on game nights and another cohort, a
20-year-old, 4-foot-4 man named Brandon Schoeneberg sometimes plays the role
of Mini-Clutch, a smaller sidekick to Boudwin's character.

    Much of Boudwin's time at games is spent pacing the aisles and goofing
around with fans. He also spends an inordinate amount of time hugging fans and
signing autographs.

    大部分時間Boudwin穿梭在走道間跟球迷互動. 他也花許多時間跟球迷擁抱及簽名

    During timeouts, he has a minute or twoto do a funny skit or run around with
signs to pump up the crowd.

    暫停時,就是他大顯身手的時候

    At a recent game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the game's big skit was
using a sling-shot to send Mini-Clutch across the floor into a set of bowling
pins . The two then darted around the floor, throwing T-shirts into the crowd.

    最近對上灰狼的比賽中,他們玩了一招: 把小Clutch用彈弓射往球場一邊的保齡球瓶.

    Afterward Boudwin and Schoeneberg staggered behind the stands and ripped off
their costumed heads. Just beyond the view of fans, they were gasping for air.

   “You can barely breathe in there sometimes,” Boudwin said.

    As the game went into overtime, Boudwin galloped onto the floor to dance,
flip and goad the crowd to scream louder.

    Somehow one of the mascot head's big plastic eyes got knocked loose and
Boudwin just danced faster to keep fans from seeing it jiggle around.

    After the Rockets' victory, Boudwin peeled off the Clutch suit in his
personal locker room and gulped down a bottle of water.

  “Man, that was a long game,” he panted, exhausted but happy.

    比賽結束後,Boudwin在專屬更衣室猛灌開水. "真是漫長的一役"


Plenty of challenges

    Boudwin can spend hours describing why he loves his job.

    There's the rush of performing in front of 18,000 people, the fun of making
kids laugh and the challenge of coming up with new skits.

   “I love to see people smile,” Boudwin said.

    But there are challenges.

    Like the stifling heat inside the suit that makes Boudwin soak through six
shirts a game and guzzle down copious amounts of water. Or the surprising
physical toll of life as a mascot.

    當然有辛苦的一面,裡面的悶熱讓Boudwin可以溼透6件T恤,並且灌進大量的水分

    In addition to the broken nose, Boudwin has rolled his ankle and hurt his
back doing various stunts.

    The most embarrassing moment was the legendary vomiting incident of 1997
at a Rockets playoff rally outside a store.

    Boudwin had too much Gatorade to drink and became woozy and sick. Then he
threw up inside the Clutch head. An assistant brought Boudwin a fresh head,
and he changed out of view of the fans, who didn't notice a thing.

    最著名嘔吐事件發生在1997季後賽,Boudwin喝太多開特力,結果就吐在頭套中



    大致翻一下,Clutch都是帶給球迷歡笑,我以前以為裡面的人是有輪值的,結果居然是

    同一個人!!! 而且還做了14年!!! 他的出席率大概比一堆火箭球員還高 XD
