Yao remains the crux of Morey's plan

Yao Ming remains the key to everything for the Rockets. That's the bottom
line, right, Daryl Morey?

After all of Morey's precise calculations and smart moves,
the most important step to making the Rockets serious contenders next season
requires a leap of faith.

At the beginning of the season, Morey seemed to think clearing salary-cap
space was the best way to attract a free agent.
He now believes that since a maximum-dollar one would have to take $30
million less to change teams, his best bet is a sign-and-trade deal.

Morey has collected an array of young talent and draft picks with the thought
of being prepared for such an opportunity.
And if the top players don't move, his Plan B is to draft an impact player
and sign a lesser free agent.

Morey has spent these last nine months positioning the Rockets for a serious
playoff run in 2010-11.
He steadfastly refused to make a short-term move that could have gotten the
Rockets a few more victories this season.
Every move was designed to help them this season and in the future.

Now, about this season. Morey hasn't given up. Yet. Of course, the Rockets
might need an 18-6 sprint to the playoffs,
and at the moment, they don't appear capable of it.

“We've made it real hard on ourselves,” Morey said.

The Rockets played with so much heart and energy early in the season that it

but we would have had to give up something that would hurt us in the future.”

and that was the topic of conversation when he met with Alexander and coach

before the trade deadline.
He'd acquired an impact player at a position where the Rockets need help.

“We feel good about things moving forward,” Morey said. “But there are
