Rockets sign Brad Miller to three-year contract

Finally, after a three-year struggle, the Rockets won’t have to kick Brad
Miller out of their locker room to send him down the hall to play for the
visiting team.
When the Rockets reconvene at Toyota Center, Miller can move into the home
locker room, rather than merely visit each time his team faced the Rockets
and his “favorite” coach, Rick Adelman.
The Rockets reached agreement with Miller on a three-year contract on
Saturday, filling their need for a backup center for Yao Ming with the
34-year-old, two-time All Star who had some of his best seasons in Sacramento
when Adelman coached the Kings.
"It was too good of a deal to pass up," Miller told the Chicago Tribune.
"It's my favorite coach I've ever played for. I know Kevin (Martin) real well
from our Sacramento days. (Luis) Scola had a heckuva year. And I finally get
to play with Yao (Ming) instead of guarding his big butt. The team is pretty
solid."

The deal is worth roughly $15 million, $5 million for each of the first two
seasons with $1 million guaranteed in the final season.

After a week of free agency inactivity, in a span of five days the Rockets
signed rookie Patrick Patterson, announced the decision to match guard Kyle
Lowry’s offer sheet, came to terms with forward Luis Scola and landed
Miller. With those moves they will have 15 players signed to guaranteed
contracts, and will have reached each of their free agency goals following
the unsuccessful pursuit of Chris Bosh.

Miller, a 7-0, 261-pound center out of Purdue, has averaged 11.7 points and
7.5 rebounds in his 12 seasons, making 48.2 percent of his shots. He was
especially adept at running the high-post passing portions of Adelman’s
offense in Sacramento.

“We know him really well,” Adelman said. “You’re talking about someone

our young guys. He’s a very savvy big guy that can do a lot of things.”
Miller had spoken throughout the process to Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, Denver
and Miami, with several filling their needs at the position or spending their
mid-level exceptions.

for Rick. He loved playing for him. Daryl Morey did a great job recruiting

really good. All that made for a great situation. He’s really excited about
it.”
