Mike Matheny moon shot into a double when he couldn't navigate the swirling
winds. The elements were tough, Hawpe said, before conceding, "I should have
gotten to those balls."
Pitcher Joe Kennedy, 25, plunked a batter. He retreated to the bench,
bewildered, his afternoon ruined by broken-bat hits and his own throwing
error.
"It's one of the situations where all you can do is laugh," said Kennedy,
tagged for nine runs, the second worst start in his career. "I was sitting
there after I was out of the game wondering what the heck is going on?"
