Hernandez will be starting the second home opener of his career Monday when
the Royals pack Kauffman Stadium for a mid-afternoon liftoff.
A year separated his two starts because he sat out 2004 after having his
right elbow rejiggered. In 2003, he was the winning pitcher in a 3-0 decision
over the Chicago White Sox.
"That was my first time to concentrate and it was a great moment," Hernandez
said. "Six shutout innings and only three hits. I hope I get something
similar."
Whoa, he shorted himself a bit. Actually, he gave up just two hits and one
walk.
Hernandez resurfaced with a blaze last Wednesday, pitching the Royals to
their first victory, 7-2, at Detroit.
"That's one guy I don't worry about. You know what you're going to get,"
manager Tony Pena said. "I was impressed by the way he threw the ball. He had
real good velocity -- it was up to 93, 94 miles an hour."
