They do their damage differently. Guerrero is a free swinger, while
Bonds is one of the most patient hitters of all-time. You can pitch around
Bonds -- and teams have often employed that strategy in recent seasons. If
you try to pitch around Guerrero, he's likely to crush a pitch outside the
strike zone. If you walk him, you almost have to do so intentionally.
"If I throw a fastball down the middle 100 times, I'm saying Barry's probably
going to hit 80 out of the park. With [Guerrero], I can't say that. Who knows
what he'll do?"
"With Bonds, you can almost bet. When you make a mistake in the strike zone,
it's going to be extra bases. I don't feel like Guerrero's in that class yet...
I just don't think there's anybody that's in his class or has ever been in his
class. For that matter, I doubt there ever will be again."
