Preview: Lazio-Modena
Posted November 24, 2002 - 11:03 by Mattias
BACKGROUND
Lazio are not enjoying the best time one could think of. Rumours that president
Sergio Cragnotti might sell his majority stake in the club were confirmed two
weeks ago to spark up wild speculation about the Biancocelesti's future.
The fans must know that every cloud has its silver lining as football-savvy
Libyan leader Abou Qadafhi will not take over Lazio after all. It sounded as
a relief for the tifosi, who were not very excited at the prospect of having a
dictator as they new boss.
On the pitch things are going well: a win over Modena would put them third,
which is a fantastic result given the current conditions at the club. Now it's
the turn of the visiting Gialloblu, who are enjoying a fantastic start to their
Serie A comeback after 40 years.
Modena are feared by some Lazio players who kept in mind the Canarini's fine
win over AS Roma in the Olimpico on week 2. The good form by unknown players
like Beppe Sculli, Paolo Ponzo or former Lazio goalie Marco Ballotta helped
the former Serie C1 champions a great deal.
LATEST TEAM NEWS
Lazio have just confirmed the transfer of former Verona defender Massimo Oddo
to Valencia. It came as a small compensation for Los Ches, who have just
received the remaining €12m owed by Lazio for Gaz Mendieta. As for the Modena
game, Argentina international Juan Pablo Sorin was left out due to exhaustion,
whereas Giannichedda is injured. Corradi and Lopez should lead the Lazio
attacking line.
French sensation Kamara limped off Modena's friendly match on Thursday to cast
a major doubt on his availability for the trip to Olimpico. Fabbrini should
step in to play alongside Beppe Sculli. Highly rated midfielder Mauri is sure
to play in midfield behind the pair.
