Franco Carraro believes the internal conflict within Italian football must
stop if it is to prosper next year.
The president of the Italian Football Association (FIGC) admitted 2002 had
been a horrible year for the sport, but is convinced the fans will not desert
the stands in droves.
He told www.gazzetta.it: "The problem is there is too much internal conflict
and this has caused too much stress.
"But football is becoming more and more popular, and the interest is
increasing all the time. There has been a big increase in interest in amateur
football, in youth football and women's football too.
"I was worried the interest might be dying, but all the young people like
football. Recently I read a poll that said only Brad Pitt is more popular
than David Beckham. Today there isn't any Italian actor more popular than
the players."
