Lazio are trying hard to forget this weekend's Roman derby in order to
concentrate on their trip to Poland for a crucial UEFA Cup clash with Wisla
Krakow on Wednesday.
The postponement of last Thursday's second leg clash due to an icy pitch has
not helped Lazio, whose match with city rivals Roma is looming on Saturday,
but coach Roberto Mancini is determined to focus on the Polish challenge.
"It will not be a match like the rest but this can also gives us strength to
hold on to the victory," said Lazio coach Roberto Mancini at Tuesday's press
conference.
Mancini will bring out his heaviest artillery for the encounter, which is
intriguingly balanced after the 3-3 draw in the first leg in Rome.
"I will choose the best formation without thinking about the derby, most p
robably whoever scores first will have the opportunity to qualify to the next
round," said Mancini.
Lazio need to find the winning formula again, after Sunday's 2-2 draw with
Perugia marked their fifth consecutive failure to seal a win.
Although level on aggregate, the Italian side trail heavily on away goals so
effectively need to win in order to guarantee a place into the last eight.
First choice goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi is still recovering from injury and
will miss the match and be replaced by Luca Marchegiani.
Jaap Stam, Paolo Negro, Giuseppe Favalli and Fernando Couto are expected to
make up a four-man defensive unit as Sinisa Mihajlovic has stayed in Rome
nursing a back injury.
However, Dejan Stankovic has recovered from a back problem and the Serbia and
Montenegro midfielder should take his place in midfield alongside Stefano
Fiore, Diego Simeone, Dejan Stankovic and Cesar.
Former Italian international Dino Baggio is out with flu, while striker
Bernardo Corradi is not eligible.
Striker Simone Inzaghi is available after recovering from an operation on his
left arm although Claudio Lopez and Chiesa should start up front.
Mancini is still worried about injuries to players in Wednesday's match.
"My only serious fear is that someone can hurt themselves, in football to
lose or to win can happen but what is not good is to have any physical damage
done to our players, and I am not talking only about my players but the Wisla
players," said Mancini.
