The Rome derby is always a heartfelt occasion, but when Lazio are aiming for
a Champions' League spot and the Giallorossi are hovering above the
relegation zone it becomes an even more intriguing match.
The derby has already been played twice this season – in Serie A and the
Coppa Italia Semi-Final – and goals were guaranteed in both games with a
2-2 draw and 2-1 victory for Roma.
Fabio Capello's men are improving with a 3-1 win over Empoli last week, but
the defence continues to show weaknesses and the strike force relies heavily
on Francesco Totti. Antonio Cassano is suspended while Marco Delvecchio and
Traianos Dellas remain sidelined.
Jonathan Zebina returns from a one-match ban to shore up the back line. There
is the danger they will be distracted by the upcoming Champions' League trip
to face Arsenal, but it is hard to believe anything can take away the
atmosphere surrounding the Rome derby.
Lazio are also involved in European action with their rescheduled UEFA Cup
tie in Poland played on Wednesday afternoon. Goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi is
still sidelined, but Dejan Stankovic and Sinisa Mihajlovic are battling to
recover from muscular problems. Claudio Lopez and Bernardo Corradi will be
eager to increase their tally against a defence that has conceded 32 goals
in 23 games this season.
