Lazio boss Roberto Mancini has four international strikers going for only two
places in his starting line-up for Sunday night's televised clash with Empoli.
Claudio Lopez, Bernardo Corradi, Enrico Chiesa and Simone Inzaghi are all fit
and bang in form for a Lazio side looking to end a run of seven consecutive
league draws.
Argentina star Lopez and Italy international Corradi are favourites to make
Mancini's initial eleven, with Inzaghi, who grabbed the only goal in the UEFA
Cup win over Besiktas on Thursday, and Chiesa on the bench.
The Biancocelesti will be without Dejan Stankovic, who is banned for two games
after being sent off in last weekend's Rome derby, so Fabio Liverani steps
into central midfield for the fourth-placed Romans.
Defender Giuseppe Pancaro will also miss the game with a foot injury.
He'll be replaced at centre-back by Paolo Negro, who will partner Sinisa
Mihajlovic.
Serbian star Mihajlovic has enjoyed a return to form and fitness this year
following a couple of patchy seasons in the capital, and he spoke this week
of the special relationship with Mancini which has helped relaunch his
career.
"I would not say that we are like father and son, because 'Mancio' becomes
angry if people suggest that," he joked. "However, I admit that I think of
him as a brother.
"Mancini is in his element at Lazio. He has given a lot for this club and, if
there is a proper plan for the future in place, I believe he will stay here
for a long time."
But Mancini's rapport with Mihajlovic will be the last thing on Empoli's
minds as they step out at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday evening.
The Tuscans gave themselves some vital breathing space by defeating Piacenza
last weekend, which leaves them two points clear of the relegation zone in
12th.
However, they are still without inspirational playmaker Antonio Di Natale,
who will be out of action for a further two weeks after injuring his knee in
the 3-1 defeat at Roma two weeks ago.
On-loan AC Milan player Marco Borriello will play as a lone striker, with
Massimiliano Cappellini, Tommaso Rocchi and Antonio Busce operating just
behind him.
Marco Carparelli is struggling with flu but is likely to be on the bench
along with Francesco Tavano, who must feel aggrieved not to be selected after
scoring against Piacenza.
"The win last week helped to relax us a lot, which I think will be a key
factor in the remaining games," claimed defender Manuele Belleri.
"Even though we are playing in the evening against Lazio and will therefore
know the results of all the other games, I do not think this will affect the
way we play.
"We are by no means in the last-chance saloon, but every game from here on
vital to our chances of survival."
