BACKGROUND
Lazio run into a Como side on the back of their best result of the season.
The 5-1 mauling of Bologna two weeks ago sent shock waves through Serie A,
and gave Eugenio Fascetti's men renewed hope for the rest of the campaign.
Lazio seem to have conceded that they are out of the title race, and have now
focused on securing a Champions League spot for next season. Their hopes of
achieving this feat were damaged by a late defeat at direct rivals Parma
couple of weeks ago. Adriano, the thorn in so many sides this season, popped
up with the winner.
One mustn't underestimate the job that Roberto Mancini has done in turning
this club around, however. He has breathed new life into several players
whose careers looked to be going nowhere, and he has taken the team to within
two games of the Uefa Cup final. On the road Lazio have been a devastating
counterattacking force, and one of the best sides to watch in the whole of
Europe this season.
The same can't be said of Como who have been found desperately wanting at
the highest level this season. Having said that they have lifted themselves
up to third from bottom on goal difference and that Bologna thrashing would
surely have done wonders for morale. Amazing what the signing of a couple of
quality strikers -Nicola Caccia and Nicola Amoruso- can do.
FORM GUIDE
Lazio: Last Six Matches: WDWWWL
The Parma setback was the Biancocelesti's only recent defeat. After a number
of frustrating Serie A draws, Mancini's men beat Besiktas in both legs of
their Uefa Cup quarter final. Porto now beckon on Thursday.
Como: Last Six Matches: LLWDLW
The two wins came against Piacenza and Bologna. Otherwise, Como have been
thrashed by Reggina, Juventus and Inter. The draw came at home to Brescia.
LATEST TEAM NEWS
Lazio: Stam is out for around a month after picking up a thigh injury in
Holland's Euro 2004 qualifier with Moldova on Wednesday. Otherwise Mancini
has no other injury problems.
Como: Fascetti has no injury concerns and is able to field a full-strength
side. Amoruso and Caccia will continue in attack, while one of the main
dangermen Music will also start.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Cesar (Lazio): the Brazilian has been a real menace on the left wing this
season. He has fine pace and a hat-full of tricks.
Vedin Music (Como): the midfielder looks like he can play at a higher
level, and the Lazio defence will need to be on their guard.
