Mendieta off to Atletico Monday 4 August, 2003

Gaizka Mendieta's Lazio nightmare may be coming to an end with talk
suggesting a return to Spain is on the cards.
The midfielder is said to have agreed personal terms with Atletico
Madrid and the proposed move could go through this week.
The 28-year-old recently agreed to accept a new salary reduced contract
at the Olimpico but he doesn't seem to figure in Coach Roberto Mancini's
plans.
Mendieta was signed two years ago for a massive ￡29m after he was a star
of the Valencia side that reached two successive Champions' League finals.
However, his debut season in Serie A saw him struggle to settle and he
was often left out of the side.
He was then loaned to Barcelona last season but the Nou Camp outfit
rejected the chance to complete his signing this summer.
