Goran Pandev bagged a brace as Torino crashed to their fifth defeat on the trot.
Alberto Zaccheroni returned to face his former club, but had more important
things on his mind - namely the threat to his job after four straight defeats.
He also had three men suspended, Gabriele Cioffi, Jacopo Balestri and Gianluca
Comotto. The Biancocelesti were unbeaten in 2007 and closing in on the Champions
League spots, although they were hampered by last week's 0-0 draw at Atalanta
and an injury to Angelo Peruzzi. Luis Jimenez made his Olimpico debut.
Stefano Mauri's scuffed finish with his weaker right foot was smothered,
then Manuel Belleri drilled over from six yards to waste a great scoring
opportunity.
Lazio eventually took the lead after 10 minutes when a Massimo Mutarelli
cross-field pass found Goran Pandev and he delicately chipped Christian
Abbiati from a tight angle.
Abbiati parried a Mauri strike from a similar position and Tommaso Rocchi
nodded Belleri's cross wide. Toro also had a promising opportunity, but former
Lazio man Roberto Muzzi's first touch let him down. Soon after, Franceschini
held up a free kick for Muzzi's sliding finish, though Sebastiano Siviglia
did just enough to put him off.
Rocchi found far too much space inside the Granata defence and drilled over
from 10 yards, while Marco Ballotta took two attempts to smother a fierce
Diego De Ascentis strike.
A long-range Galli effort bounced just in front of Ballotta and Alessandro Rosina
curled wide of the far post.
Lazio made it 2-0 on the hour mark. Mauri returned to his favoured position
behind the front two and immediately created the goal with a decisive assist
for Pandev's angled drive.
The Macedonian tried to turn provider for Rocchi, though the angled drive was
inches out.
Deep into stoppages, Ardito performed a goalline clearance to keep out
Guillermo Stendardo's header from a corner kick.
