Ascoli 2 - 2 Lazio
Soncin 69 (A), Rocchi 73 (L), Di Biagio pen 76 (A), Jimenez 84 (L)
Stadio Del Duca
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This was a spectacular encounter that saw 10-man Lazio twice fight back to
earn a point, although it ends their eight-match winning streak.
The Biancocelesti were coming off eight consecutive victories and were
expected to comfortably continue that run at bottom of the table Ascoli,
who had lost their last three. Michelangelo Minieri and Valon Behrami were
suspended, while Cristian Ledesma returned from his ban. Ascoli's last
victory in this fixture was in December 1983.
A ninth straight win would equal the club record set by Sven Goran Eriksson,
while reconstruction work opened the Stadio Del Duca for business.
Guglielmo Stendardo had a goal disallowed for offside, as he was in an
irregular position when Stefano Mauri's effort came off the upright.
Moments later Goran Pandev wasted a golden opportunity on the counter,
placing his lob wide of an empty net.
Pandev cut back from the by-line for Mauri, but Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos
was fantastic with his point-blank save on the former Udinese man.
Andrea Soncin went close for the home side, his long-range right-foot
strike skimming the upright.
Soncin was again dangerous, but when he got past Angelo Peruzzi on Paolo
Foglio's long ball forward, he fell to the ground and was booked for
simulation.
After the restart Peruzzi flew to fingertip another Soncin snapshot on to
the crossbar.
Gaby Mudingayi ran forward on the break and his finish was deflected out
for a corner kick, but Ascoli remained threatening as Stefano Guberti
shook the side-netting.
Lazio also hit the frame of the goal, as Stendardo's looping header came
off the bar on 57 minutes.
But Ascoli were pushing up in droves and eventually took the lead on 70
minutes. Soncin got between two defenders for a looping header at the back
post that Peruzzi could not block.
However, it lasted just three minutes, as Simone Inzaghi was too late to
get on to a long ball forward, but it fell kindly for Tommaso Rocchi to
smash home the low drive.
It was an extremely entertaining game with end to end stuff. Moments later
Soncin rattled the crossbar and as the ball bounced into the path of
Bjelanovic, Stendardo shoved him from behind for a penalty and red card.
Gigi Di Biagio stepped up to convert for his first goal in an Ascoli jersey.
Peruzzi had to push away a Boudianski effort, but at the other end
Eleftheropoulos flew to perform a fantastic one-handed save on a Luis Jimenez
right-foot curler.
Jimenez got his first goal for Lazio soon after, though. He sprung the
offside trap thanks to a Nastase error and spun round to fire into the
near top corner.
