Adrian Mutu secured a crucial win that keeps Fiorentina in the hunt for a
European place and cuts Lazio's lead from fourth-placed Milan to just one
point.
These two sides were both embroiled in the Calciopoli scandal and forced to
start the season with penalties - three points for Lazio, 15 for Fiorentina
- yet here they were once again challenging for a top four finish. The
Biancocelesti needed a win to keep Milan at a safe distance from third,
having only picked up two points in as many games against Ascoli and Chievo.
Valon Behrami and Luciano Zauri were suspended. Fabio Liverani returned to
the Olimpico for the first time since his summer move to
Fiorentina, while Luis Jimenez faced his former club.
Christian Manfredini's cross was not quite turned in by Tommaso Rocchi and
at the other end Martin Jorgensen's half-volley was off target.
Rocchi flicked up Stephen Makinwa's cutback and spun round to smash his shot
towards the near post, though Sebastien Frey was ready for it. The former
Empoli striker went even closer on 14 minutes, his low drive thumping the
base of the upright.
Liverani's free kick dipped on to the roof of the net and Frey parried a
Cristian Ledesma right-foot snapshot, but Jimenez was unable to make the
most of the loose ball.
Frey was again kept busy by Rocchi's strike from a tight angle and a Bonetto
effort from the edge of the area.
The heat started to take its toll on the teams in the second half and the
tempo slowed down. Luca Toni was booked for a late tackle and will be
suspended for the game against Chievo.
Substitute Giampaolo Pazzini's header from a Manuel Pasqual cross skimmed
the woodwork for the Viola.
The deadlock was eventually broken on 71 minutes. The Lazio defence was
caught napping as Jorgensen was given all the space he needed to place a
looping cross from the left on to the head of Adrian Mutu.
Lazio had a great chance to draw level when a lucky ricochet fell to Goran
Pandev, but he incredibly prodded the ball wide from a yard!
De Silvestri's effort was palmed round the post and Diakite' was caught
offside as the Biancocelesti poured forward.
