Lazio President Claudio Lotito insists that the Biancocelesti can negotiate a
tough trip to Bucharest, despite their goalkeeper crisis.
A 2-2 draw with Torino at the Stadio Olimpico on opening day did little to
ease fears that veteran ‘keeper Angelo Peruzzi had not been adequately
replaced.
The capital club had been expecting to hand the gloves to Argentine custodian
Juan Pablo Carrizo after agreeing a ￡5m deal with River Plate this summer,
but unexpected stumbling blocks have emerged.
Carrizo believes that he can apply for Italian citizenship as his great
grandfather originated in Pinerolo in Piedmont, but there have been delays
with certain documents called into question.
At the moment it appears that the August 31 deadline to register Carrizo as
an EU player for European competition may come too soon and 43-year-old Marco
Ballotta may keep his place between the posts.
Lazio face a tough trip to face Dinamo Bucharest in the Champions League third
preliminary round after a 1-1 draw in Rome which saw Valon Behrami and
Massimo Mutarelli dismissed and Emilson Cribari injured.
With French defender Mobido Diakhite’ also sidelined for four months with a
fractured tibia, Delio Rossi’s men have it all to do, but Lotito still has
high hopes.
“The true fans will stay behind us,” he told Radio Spazio Aperto. “I spoke
to the players and they are concentrated and determined, despite all the
injuries.”
“As for the Carrizo saga, it’s not true that we were negligent. We had the
deal done in July, but then things emerged that had nothing to do with us.
“If Carrizo is an EU citizen before August 31 then he is a Lazio player, if
not then he will go on loan. Other than him, we don’t need any more
reinforcements.”
