Felice PULICI 1972-77
Pulici was Lazio's No 1 during their 1974 Scudetto success. He played 150
Serie A games with them, never missing a top-flight match during his
five-year stint in the capital. A fine shot-stopper, Pulici was given a
job as a director after retiring from the game. Previously played for Lecco
and Novara.
Giuseppe WILSON 1969-80
Darlington-born Giuseppe Wilson was one of Lazio's most loyal servants having
played for the club for a decade. The rugged stopper helped Lazio escape from
Serie B in 1972 to become champions of Italy for the first time in 1974.
Made nearly 300 Serie A appearances for Lazio and gained three Azzurri caps.
Sinisa MIHAJLOVIC 1998-04
A controversial figure, Sinisa Mihajlovic made his name in Red Star
Belgrade's 1991 European Cup winning side. He moved to Italy in 1992 when
he joined Lazio's great rivals, Roma. An unhappy two years in the capital
was followed by four more enjoyable seasons at Sampdoria. There under Sven
Goran Eriksson he was switched from a midfielder to a sweeper. He reunited
with Eriksson at Lazio winning the League and Cup double in 2000.
Alessandro NESTA 1993-03
Former club captain, Alessandro Nesta was a youth-team product and a symbol
at the club before financial problems forced his sale to Milan. He holds the
record for most national team appearances while with the club and was made
skipper at the tender age of 21. A brilliant stopper, the Rome-born player
was an integral part of the ‘old’ Lazio.
Diego FUSER 1992-98
Another to have played for both Lazio and Roma. The right-winger joined Lazio
in 1992 from Milan and immediately made an impact with his strength, pace and
ferocious shot. A fans' favourite, he made nearly 200 top-flight appearances
before joining Parma where he won trophies at home and abroad. Fuser blotted
his Lazio copybook by joining Roma in the summer of 2001.
Luciano RE CECCONI 1972-77
The blond-haired schemer emerged as one of the most exciting members of the
1974 team after signing from Foggia in 1972. He enjoyed four seasons as a
Serie A regular and was on the verge of the national team before being shot
dead in 1977. Cecconi was killed after a fatal practical joke when he broke
into a jewellers disguised as a robber.
Renzo GARLASCHELLI 1972-80
Burly wide man Renzo Garlaschelli moved to Lazio from Como in 1972. His 10
goals were instrumental in the club's 1974 title success and he would go on
to play 199 Serie A games for the club. Unfortunately, he never graced the
international stage.
Aron WINTER 1992-97
The underrated Aron Winter joined Lazio from Ajax in 1992. In the exciting
Lazio teams of the mid-1990s he was always the 'straight' man who complimented
the skills of Paul Gascoigne and Thomas Doll. The classy Dutch international
left to join Inter in 1997, helping the Nerazzurri beat his old club in the
1998 UEFA Cup Final.
Pavel NEDVED 1996-01
Pavel Nedved's sale to Juventus in the summer of 2001 caused uproar in Rome.
The Czech international was a firm favourite having helped the club to seven
trophies after his arrival from Sparta Prague in 1996. His technical class
combined with an ability to run none stop and eye for goal marked him as a
special player.
Giorgio CHINAGLIA 1969-76
Giorgio Chinaglia is the most famous member of Lazio's 1974 title-winning
team. Like Wilson, he was from Britain having been born in Swansea. He signed
from Internapoli of Serie C in 1969 before netting over 100 goals during his
seven seasons in Rome and winning 14 Italy caps. He was Serie A top scorer
during the title win in 1974 and later played in the United States.
Giuseppe SIGNORI 1992-98
Signori never won any club honours at Lazio but his effort and skill deserved
more. Three times Serie A top scorer while with the club, he helped Lazio
build their reputation in the 1990s. A scorer of both simple and beautiful
goals, he like so many members of this team never made the impact at
international level that he should have. Left to join Bologna in 1998.
THE COACH:
Sven Goran ERIKSSON 1997-01
Eriksson just pips legendary 1974 title-winner Thomas Maestrelli as Lazio's
Coach. The arrival of the Swede in 1997 helped turn Lazio from contenders to
champions. Eriksson won two Italian Cups, a Scudetto and the European
Cup-Winners Cup amongst other honours. After previously coaching Roma and
Samp, this ice-cool Swede left to take charge of England after a
disappointing final few months to his Lazio career.
