Goal.com http://0rz.tw/945iD Rocchi Strike Sinks Ten-Man Palermo Lazio picked up their first win in five games in Serie A against ten-man Palermo thanks to Tommaso Rocchi's second half strike... Lazio 1-0 Palermo First Half Lazio came into this game having not won any of their last five fixtures in Serie A. The Bianconcelesti have serious European ambitions but they have been distracted by reports of player bust ups and managerial changes. Palermo on the other hand were full of confidence having beat Siena 2-0 last week. Fans expected an attacking trident from Lazio, but coach Delio Rossi decided to leave Tommaso Rocchi on the bench. Both teams were labouring early on. It seemed like the 90th minute such was the slackness. Neither side really threatened. Palermo were well organised and kept things tight while Lazio did well to keep possession and create a few half chances. The first fell to Goran Pandev. The Macedonian international has come under some criticisms recently, but he showed his intentions when he is super run left the Rosanero defenders short. However, his finish was disappointing. With the Sicilian side closing every space, it was Pasquale Foggia who tried the one-man team tactics as he ventured forward. Simon Kjaer was beaten by the winger's quick skill, the right foot finish forcing a good save from Marco Amelia. With Lazio and Palermo chasing Europe, an exciting clash was expected, but fans were not treated to such luxury as the players struggled to create any spectacle, perhaps cautious of conceding an early goal. The Biancocelesti were on the ball in every sense but some quick thinking from Fabio Liverani and Antonio Nocerino caught the home side slacking. Coach Delio Rossi was relieved to see the former Juventus midfielder's effort hit the advertising board rather than the back of the net. Palermo coach Davide Ballardini chewed his gum down on the bench but his players just couldn't gobble up their chances. A super break involving Miccoli saw the Lazio defence carved open like the turkey at Christmas. However, the hitman failed with his attempt when he should have cooked up a treat. Instead he burnt his right-foot effort wide, much to the relief of the home side. Rossi had demanded for a goal feast but it was the Sicilians who looked closer to scoring with their hunger. Lazio did begin to show themselves down the other end. Pandev, like every other week was the dangerman. He latched onto Zarate's knock-on but he was on a head-on collision course with Amelia and it was the Italian national goalkeeper who came out on top with an astonishing save from point blank range. An injury scare followed for the Romans as Pandev went down hurt but some treatment on the touchline solved his left knee problem. Zarate did have the ball in net but celebrations were cut short as the linesman raised his flag. The Argentine striker was caught on the wrong side of an alert Sicilian defence. Second Half Lazio came out fighting and they should have been in front within a minute of the restart. Foggia's x-ray vision picked up Zarate's movement and a super chance was created in a flash. Palermo's defence hardly moved. The Argentine was clean through but a super save from Amelia kept the scores level. The Sicilians responded with Miccoli. The short and stout striker blitzed his way past Lichtsteiner but his right-footed effort failed to hit the back of the net. Amelia was proving why he is Italy's number two custodian as he pulled of two consecutive saves to deny Foggia. Lazio stepped on the gas but it was Amelia who had his hands on the brake as he stopped everything which came his way. Palermo were always dangerous, but at times they were like a dormant volcano, always there sleeping away but ready to explode at any moment with Miccoli bubbling away up front. Although the game didn't offer much in terms of talking points, Rossi's sacrifice of Zarate for Tommaso Rocchi will stir the debate. It was a good move though as the Italian hitman almost scored with his first touch, his header just going over. Zarate looked disappointed as he made himself comfortable on the bench. Although the club have denied any player fall-outs, the relationship between both strikers seemed cold as they swapped places. The home side cannot be faulted for effort. Lazio's football factory was working hard on the field, the spanner in the works was the lack of clinical finishing in front of goal. Chances came and went and, after much puffing and panting, Rossi's men finally got their breakthrough. Supersub Rocchi did the damage. The Italian took full advantage of Meghni's pinpoint cross and sent the ball past Amelia and into the sack with a decent left-foot finish. The goalkeeper, who was good all night, couldn't get a hand to the ball as it flashed past him. Palermo reacted instantly but Bresciano's volley was wayward. The Sicilians were always in for a bad night after going one down and this was confirmed when Nocerino came in too strong on Lichtsteiner. The defender miss-timed his tackle on the big Swiss star and he was sent off for a second yellow. The incident also ended Lichtsteiner's night as he was replaced by Kolarov. Foggia hit the post from the resulting free kick as Palermo felt the heat. The Sicilians were never able to get themselves back into the fray and the result sees Lazio move closer towards the European places.
