Hunter, Nailon seeing less time by the minute

They were acquired to be key members of a refurbished bench. There was Steven
Hunter, the young, athletic 7-footer who would fill in at center and power
forward, helping with the defense and shot-blocking, picking up opportunity
points. There was the veteran Lee Nailon, coming off his most productive
season, averaging 14.2 points in 68 games with the New Orleans Hornets. He
would be getting some time at both forward positions, loosening up defenses
with his jump-shooting ability.

As the Sixers prepared for tomorrow night's game against Golden State, coach
Maurice Cheeks remained calm and philosophic about the ebb and flow of his
substitution rotation.

In his last seven appearances, Hunter has produced eight points in 71 minutes.
Since back-to-back double-doubles in points and rebounds Nov. 21 against the

once. The same guy who started the first 13 games in place of injured center
Samuel Dalembert was a DNP-CD (did not play/coach's decision) Dec. 9 against
Charlotte and Dec. 10 against New Jersey. He was held out of Sunday's 107-80
victory in Toronto because of lower left leg pain.

Nailon appeared for the final 5 minutes, 2 seconds against the Raptors; it was
his first time on the court in six games, including one he missed because of a
broken toe. Since contributing 21 points and six rebounds in 25 minutes against
the Los Angeles Clippers, he has managed a total of 26 points in 94 minutes
over 11 games.

Instead of Hunter and Nailon, Cheeks has been giving extended minutes to rookie

a sore lower back) and Matt Barnes. Even John Salmons, the one constant in the
substitution rotation, has hit a lull, shooting 8-for-30 in the last six games,
15-for-53 in the last 10, including 0-for-6 against the Raptors. Kevin Ollie
has played modest minutes as a backup guard; second-round draft choice Louis
Williams has barely played at all.

regular season.

young players go through drills yesterday at Philadelphia College of
Osteopathic Medicine. "They go up, they go down, and players and coaches both

season can go. Nothing is written in stone in terms of guys' production going
up or going down."

With Dalembert out with a right quadriceps strain and Bradley coming off
arthroscopic knee surgery, Cheeks squeezed some early mileage out of the
since-waived James Thomas; undrafted rookie free agent Deng Gai, also waived
Dec. 8, played a total of 5 minutes in two games. Eventually, Cheeks turned to
Randolph, who left Duke after three seasons only to go undrafted. Randolph had
10 points and seven rebounds Dec. 7 against Milwaukee, 12 rebounds in 15
minutes Dec. 14 against Atlanta, eight points and 10 rebounds in 19 minutes
last Friday night against Miami, and five points, five rebounds and five
assists against the Raptors.

do not, they sit down and another guy comes in their place. As things evolve,
you readjust. I told Steven, I'm going to put guys on the floor that, at the
time, I know what I'm going to get. I don't want to have to wonder; I want to
know. Right now, I know what I'm getting from Shavlik; there's not even a
question.

12-and-under at tomorrow's game will receive a bust of Allen Iverson.
