Iverson's late shot lifts Sixers to victory

DENVER - When we last saw the 76ers before Christmas, there appeared to be
cracks forming in their foundation, with whispered complaints in the locker
room that they weren't playing together.
But the Sixers reappeared last night for the start of their six-game Western
road swing and made a statement for togetherness and poise, especially the
way Chris Webber and Allen Iverson shared the ball with their teammates and
each other.

the Denver Nuggets at the Pepsi Center.

With the game tied at 106-all, the Sixers called a time-out with 21 seconds
left and set up the final play. Iverson held the ball against the Nuggets'
Andre Miller between the midcourt and free-throw circles, and then dribbled
before raising up and draining the jumper with the shot clock running down.
"I thought I had a pretty good look," Iverson said. "[Miller] still had a
hand in my face. I got a good look. I'll take it."

Anthony finished with a career-high 45 points for the Nuggets, the most
points scored by a Sixers opponent all season. Seven of those points came
during an 11-0 run that gave Denver a 98-93 lead with 3 minutes, 55 seconds

Iverson's game-winning shot may have been the second-biggest play of the
game. It might have come from the Sixers' tireless 6-foot guard late in the
fourth quarter, when he stepped in front of Watson to deflect a pass, chased
after the ball, dived, picked it up, and shoveled it to John Salmons.
Salmons got the ball back to Iverson, who scooped in a layup that gave the
Sixers a 103-102 lead with 1:54 left. The lead changed hands three times
after that before Andre Iguodala tied the game at 106 on a free throw with
48.5 seconds to play.

Salmons said he trailed the play just in case Iverson caught up to the ball.
"I didn't think he was going to get it at first," he said. "I ran behind him
just in case, give him some help if he got it. He gave it to me. and I saw
'Dre [Iguodala] going to the basket, but there were too many hands in my way.
So I gave it back [to Iverson], and he hit the basket."
Iverson came down heavily on his right ankle after taking a three-point shot
early in the third quarter. He got the ankle retaped during a time-out and
wound up playing 40 minutes.

The Sixers led most of the first three quarters, but Anthony, who scored 19
points in the third, sparked a comeback during which Denver outscored the
visitors by 13-2 and took an 85-80 lead early in the fourth.
The Sixers answered with a 13-2 run. They drained three straight three-point
baskets to start the rally - one by Salmons and two by Kyle Korver. When
Iverson hit a jumper with 6:59 remaining, they held a 93-87 lead.

Kenyon Martin sat out with a bruised right quadriceps and Marcus Camby, the
NBA's leading rebounder, left the game after six minutes when he aggravated a
sprained right pinky
