Hunter is getting back in the flow

PORTLAND
Steven Hunter was never directly told he'd be going back into the 76ers'
substitution rotation. He just followed the trail of bread crumbs left by coach
Maurice Cheeks along the way.

Some of that had somehow slipped away from the 7-foot forward/center, who was
signed as a free agent after spending last season with the Phoenix Suns. As the
Sixers look ahead to tomorrow's New Year's Eve game in Salt Lake City, Hunter
is averaging a modest 5.9 points and 3.9 rebounds in 20.8 minutes over 24
games, including the first 13 as a starter while center Samuel Dalembert
rehabbed from a strained right quadriceps.

But the essential energy began to dissipate. Cheeks held him out of games Dec.
9 and 10 against the Charlotte Bobcats and New Jersey Nets. A staph infection
in his leg kept him out of games Dec. 18 and 21 against Toronto and Atlanta.
What had been Hunter's minutes were going to developing rookie Shavlik Randolph.

Cheeks, though, knows he needs all the manpower he can muster. As the Sixers
headed west, he decided to go back to Hunter.

"I think he needed a shot," Cheeks said after a spirited workout yesterday at

given another shot. He's responded the last two games with effort."

Hunter contributed four rebounds and three blocks in 17 minutes in Tuesday
night's 108-106 victory in Denver and came back with eight points and six
rebounds in 20 minutes of Wednesday night's 95-91 loss to the Blazers. The
rebound total was his highest since Nov. 23, when he took 10 in Milwaukee.

No argument from Hunter, 24, who never found his niche with Orlando, where he

Randolph's time was reduced to only 7 minutes against the Nuggets and 5 against
the Blazers.

two; he hasn't stayed on the court more than 27 minutes in any of the last four
games.
