King not happy with .500 but not ready to talk trade

LOS ANGELES - Billy King is overseeing a 76ers team that went into last night's
finale of its road trip with a disappointing .500 record and involved in a
continuing search to become more consistent.

But if he intends to add or trade for a player to help give the Sixers a jolt
in the right direction, King wasn't showing his cards.

"You never say never," the team's president and general manager said yesterday
at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, where the Sixers conducted their morning
shoot-around before last night's game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

King gave up Kenny Thomas, Corliss Williamson and Brian Skinner to acquire
Webber and two other players on Feb. 23, when the Sixers were 26-27. The team
finished 17-12 with Webber on the roster, but lost to Detroit in the first
round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Whom King could dangle in front of other teams to get an impact player is
anyone's guess. Webber and Allen Iverson are presumably untouchable, and King
does not want to break up the young nucleus of Kyle Korver, Samuel Dalembert
and Andre Iguodala.

So that would mean a bench player, such as John Salmons or Steven Hunter, might
be offered, or maybe King would seek out a team looking for expiring contracts
and invite it to take the $10 million pact of Jamal Mashburn, who will not play
again.

Salmons is a versatile player who started strong but has struggled mightily
with his shot in the last 17 games. The 7-foot Hunter, who was signed as a free
agent in the off-season, has been somewhat of a disappointment.

The Sixers went into last night's game with a 16-16 record and were 2-4 on

"That [.500] is what our record is right now," King said. "I don't believe
we're a .500 team, but if the record says it right now, that's what we are.

"I think it is incumbent on our players, coaches, and everybody involved to

King said the trip has shown that the Sixers have "got to be more consistent in
the areas of rebounding and sharing the ball." He noted that they shared the
ball well in wins over Sacramento and Denver, with 28 assists in each game, but
not as well in the four losses, in which they averaged 14.3 assists.

As for the trip as a whole, King said: "I thought we let some games get away,

at this point that this is the make-or-break part of the season, with 50 games
left."

至於整個旅程，老王說：「我想我們讓一些能取勝的比賽溜走了，不過那就是球季的過程

King also said team officials have been holding discussions about hiring
another assistant coach to replace Jim Lynam, who has stepped down due to
health reasons, but he did not comment further.
