Sixers score plenty; defense is basket case

Aaron McKie, a former 76er, likes to fire up the satellite dish and watch his
old team play every chance he gets, and he finds something significantly
different in their style of game these days.

McKie didn't have to finish the sentence. The Sixers are losing because,
through 33 games, they have yet to find a way to be consistent with their
defensive effort from game to game.

No one is saying it has to be the same way it was in Larry Brown's day, the era
to which McKie was referring, when the Sixers used to grind on every defensive
possession and win a healthy majority of their games.

But an inability to get stops at key moments was the primary reason the Sixers
suffered through a 2-5 stretch on their seven contests away from the Wachovia
Center, and why the team returned to Philadelphia yesterday with a sub-.500
record.

The Sixers could have reversed that record had they been able to take care of
business on the defensive end late in games at Atlanta, Portland and Utah.
Their last two losses were by 20 and 26 points, against a team (Phoenix) and a

"We've got to get some stops," Allen Iverson said Friday night after the Sixers
closed their trip by getting hammered, 119-93, by the Lakers. "We've got to
somehow find out how to play a certain way on defense every night. We don't
have an identity as far as how we play on the defensive end. We might play well
one night, and the next night we might not play well."

The Sixers allowed 100 or more points in five of their seven games and lost
four of those five. The Lakers established season highs for shooting percentage
(58.5), three-pointers (13) and field goals (48) by a Sixers opponent, and
Bryant's 48-point performance was the most against them all season.

full all night with Bryant.

Rebounding continues to be a sore spot. The Sixers are 3-16 when they grab
fewer rebounds than their opponent. Center Samuel Dalembert followed up his
career-high 22-rebound night against Phoenix with a four-board effort against
the Lakers.

The Sixers remain the second-highest-scoring team in the NBA with a 102.1-point
average, but even that aspect of their game is showing some cracks. After
having turned the ball over 18 times just once in their first 28 games, the
Sixers committed 18 or more turnovers in four of their last five, averaging
16.6 over that span.

In addition, the Sixers did not do a great job of sharing the basketball on the
road. They dished out 28 assists in each of their two victories, but they
averaged just 14.4 assists in their five defeats.

"We're obviously a better team when we can break, but we can't break if we
don't get stops," said Kyle Korver, who hit better than 50 percent of his

pretty predictable. We're not running our plays sharply.

and eight of their next 10, at the Wachovia Center beginning with tomorrow
