Much of what 76ers president Billy King knows and believes about the game of
basketball came from Duke University, which isn't a bad place to learn things,
with basketball chief among them.

七六人老闆Billy King對於籃球賽的了解與信念大都來自於杜克大學，
那是不錯的學習觀念的地方，很多籃球信條也在其中。

He learned that teamwork matters. He learned that talent is a very good thing
to have on a roster. And he learned, almost above all, that defense wins
basketball games.

他學到團隊合作的重要性。他學到有天份的球員在球隊陣容裡是很好的事。
還有最重要的，成功的防守會贏得勝利。

This season, like the rest of us, he has also learned that the Sixers ain't
very good at it.

本季，他就像我們一樣學到了，七六人的防守並不出色。

"It's killing me," King said last night.

The NBA season does not allow for a quick demise, however, and the Sixers have
another 48 games in which to torture everyone who thinks good defense is a
decent idea. At the current rate, they will win about half of them, lose about
half of them and give up a bushel of uncontested shots in all of them.

NBA的球季很漫長，而七六人還有48場令那些認為好防守是解決問題正確方法

This is not good news for King, who is finding the seat he occupies growing
progressively warmer. He has a franchise superstar in Allen Iverson, but won't
have him forever. He has a serviceable supporting actor in Chris Webber, but
the same issue there as well.

He has a .500 team, dwindling attendance and a trade deadline coming around
next month, at which time he will be expected to find the magic beanstalk
that leads everyone back into the sky.

"We're trying to figure it out," King said.

Before the Sixers went out and beat the Seattle SuperSonics, 107-98, last
night - finally finding a team more indifferent to defense than themselves -
King was more direct about what he won't be doing than about what he would be.

的球隊的老王，更加確定方向，他不會做他也許會做的事。

Ron Artest? Would the Sixers be interested in acquiring the Indiana star with a
penchant for trouble?

"That's a scary proposition," King said. "Everybody I talk to there tells me
that's not a deal you want to make. He's not someone you want on your roster."

Trade Iverson? Trade Webber? Go for the big shake-up?

franchise better," King said. "But I don't expect a major trade this season."

The organization, at least as King portrays it, seems to feel the team will
develop with time, and with the addition of a couple of complementary players.
King spoke of adding a good perimeter defender, of perhaps adding a big
defender.

至少老王建構了這支球隊的雛形，他似乎認為這支球隊會隨著時間而成長，
也會增加一些補足球隊缺點的球員。老王提過想增加一名外線防守球員，
或是一名防守型大個兒。

"I'd like to add toughness," he said.

「我會想加強球隊韌性」，他說。

According to King, the roster is essentially set, the coach isn't going
anywhere and there is a benefit to allowing the team some time to find itself.

根據老王的說法，這陣容基本上已經建構好了。他不會換教練，而讓這支隊伍
花些時間找出自己的戰力，也是一項有利的方式。

"We've had a lot of coaches. We've had a lot of different systems," he said.
"The team that went to the Finals was a group that had been together for a
while and had a lot of continuity."

的七六人隊，花了一段時間磨合，戰力也持續一段時間」。

So, what you're seeing is probably going to be what you will continue seeing,
especially since other teams aren't beating down the door to take Matt Barnes
and Steven Hunter off their hands.

所以，現在你看到的這支球隊，也許會跟你將來看到的一樣。特別是自從其他
球隊並沒有壓低Matt Barnes、Steven Hunter的價錢，好讓他們脫手之後。

If you like the action of a 110-105 game, then maybe continuity isn't such a
bad thing, but playing this kind of defense is no way to win on a consistent
basis in the NBA.

如果你喜歡以110比105這種分數贏球，或許情況持續下去也不是壞事。
然而這種防守，在NBA裡是不可能一直贏得比賽的。

"Rebounding has been questionable all season long," coach Maurice Cheeks said.
"Maybe we play good defense, then we give up an offensive rebound and they get
an open three-pointer."

教練Maurice Cheeks表示：「一整季以來，籃板球的拼搶一直都是我們的問題。
或許我們做好防守了，但是我們讓對手搶到籃板球，接著對手就有三分線上的
大空擋」。

The effort is there, according to Cheeks, although he admits that "the numbers
don't bear that out."

根據Cheeks的說法，他們還是有努力；儘管Cheeks承認數據並不能證明一切。

The numbers before last night's game said that the Sixers were the second-worst
defensive team in the league, giving up 102.2 points per game.

數據顯示，在昨天的比賽之前，七六人是聯盟防守第二糟的球隊，

"It's something we have to get better at," Cheeks said, although he didn't
offer or expect a speedy solution to the problem.

Last night was intriguing if you ever wonder exactly what Webber does for the
Sixers. He was out with a sore back and the Sixers' defense had one of its
better recent games, although rebounding was still atrocious.

如果你曾經懷疑過到底Webber為七六人做了什麼事，那你會覺得昨晚他的缺陣
比對七六人的表現很耐人尋味。他因背傷不克出賽，而七六人卻打出最近最好
的一場防守，雖然籃板仍慘不忍睹。

In any case, it doesn't take a Duke education to know that if the defense
doesn't improve every night, the Sixers won't be improving, either.

無論如何，你不需要受過杜克大學的訓練，就可以知道，如果七六人沒辦法
每晚都加強防守，他們也不會進步。

The good news is that the front office and coaching staff appear to know the
problem. The bad news is there is no apparent plan for fixing it.

好消息是，球隊高層還有教練團都知道問題所在；
壞消息是，他們沒有可以明白解決問題的方法。

"We need better defense, but do you sacrifice areas you're good in?"
King said.

老王說：「我們的確需要較好的防守能力，但是你會捨棄你比較專精的部份嗎」？

The obvious response to that question is: If the areas you're good in are so
darn good, then why is the team 17-17?

很明顯地，這個問題的答案是：如果你表現好的地方真的他媽的那麼好，
為什麼球隊戰績是17勝17敗？

Questions, we got. Answers, we're waiting.

問題，我們已經有了；答案，我們還在等。

For Billy King and the Sixers, the clock is ticking.

但對於老王和七六人來說，時間是不會等人的。
