Changing the lineup - John Salmons in, Kyle Korver out - could help on a couple
of levels, but should not be perceived as making Korver a scapegoat. And this
will only work if Salmons plays the way he did at the start of the season,
attacking the basket, initiating plays that allow Allen Iverson to run off
screens, being aggressive on defense. Salmons has told me not to try to
interpret his body language, but I can certainly measure his pace.

Korver is one of the best three-point shooters in the league, and I subscribe
to the Larry Brown axiom of putting players in a position to succeed.

in what he can really do. He's not taking Iverson, Chris Webber or Andre
Iguodala out of the lineup. He conceivably could take out Samuel Dalembert, but
why rob yourself of one of the league's best shot blockers when your defense is
already so vulnerable? That left Korver, so that's what Cheeks did.

What effect the addition of Henry Bibby to the coaching staff has remains to be

away because of a personal health issue. Bibby played nine seasons in the
league, winning a championship with the New York Knicks. He coached Southern
California for nine seasons, which means he should have a grasp of zones - how
to play them, how to attack them. Bibby and Cheeks have been close friends
since they were teammates with the Sixers, but people within the organization
insist Bibby will tell Cheeks what Cheeks needs to hear, not what he wants to
hear.

All this is, is a start. President and general manager Billy King said a plan
has been put in place, but never offered any specifics. Hopefully, some of it
has to do with team defense, better court awareness and a more consistent
effort to share the ball on the offensive end. The Sixers are the No. 2 scoring
team in the league; Iverson and Webber are the No. 1 scoring duo, but this
group gives up as much as it gets. There are nights when these Sixers seem to
forget they have Korver open on the wings, and nights when they must think
Iguodala is invisible, other than on backdoor lobs. Result: a record of 18-20,
most recently appalling, back-to-back losses to the Washington Wizards and New
Jersey Nets.

King gave Dalembert a 6-year contract worth more than $60 million to be a
defensive force, to accumulate some points on dunks, followups and drawing
contact around the basket. I was always taught that one way to reward your
rebounder and shot blocker was to occasionally get him an easy basket. That
would work better if Dalembert had a true go-to move - a jump hook, a step-back
jumper, an up-and-under fake, something. But he doesn't, and that sometimes
leads to ill-advised shots that do little more than create a fast-break
opportunity for the opponents. One more memo to the big guys: I keep hearing
about how rebounding is effort and "want-to"; it's also about getting position,
blocking out, fending off opponents. Historically, there have been guys in the
league who would never win a jumping contest, but could get the ball off the
defensive glass. I didn't see Michael Bradley exactly leaping to take 10
rebounds against the Nets.

Finally, I've gotten dozens of e-mails in recent weeks demeaning Cheeks'
ability. I suggest that, before you do that, check the limits of what he has to
work with. A team can carry as many as 15 players, 12 active; in the Sixers'
case, one of those spots - until he formally retires - belongs to Jamal
Mashburn. Another spot belongs to second-round draft choice Louis Williams, the
19-year-old guard who is unlikely to play a single significant minute all
season. One spot has been left empty. Then there's Lee Nailon, who was signed
as an experienced free agent to provide some offense but has done precious
little. I'd like to believe Steven Hunter can be better than he has been.

I'm still in complete agreement with colleague John Smallwood, who wrote the
"Be A Hero, Billy" column; King needs to add something to this roster. The
Sixers won't have many more chances in the Iverson era, and who knows what's
coming after that? I tell my e-mailers all the time that I don't do fantasy
trades, as in, "Would you trade this guy and this guy for those two guys?" But
if I had a good name, a big defender the Sixers could realistically acquire,
I'd put it out there.
