Sixers Work Out a Quartet of Centers

In an attempt to add youth and athleticism to a front line in serious need of
depth, the 76ers worked out a quartet of centers on Tuesday morning.

Hilton Armstrong, a wiry 6-11 center, rode the bench for a large part of his
first three years at the University of Connecticut behind future lottery
picks Emeka Okafor and Charlie Villanueva. It was not until Armstrong’s
senior year at UConn that he became a starter and began to blossom into a
dominant shot blocker. While starting 33 of the Huskies’ 34 games, Armstrong
averaged 9.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game and followed in
Okafor’s footsteps by being named Big East Defensive Player of the Year.

Armstrong, who did not begin playing organized basketball until high school,
takes tremendous pride in his defense and feels that he is still a work in
progress.

Armstrong said. “I don’t like when people score on me. I like to get

Armstrong almost got the chance to show Philadelphia fans his abilities four
years ago when he made a verbal commitment to LaSalle before being noticed
and eventually signed by UConn Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun. Despite not
playing as much as he may have at LaSalle, Armstrong gained the invaluable
experiences of playing against the best big men in the country and winning a
national championship.

Armstrong was not the only Defensive Player of the Year present on Tuesday.
Patrick O’Bryant, a 7-0 center who earned the Missouri Valley Conference’s
honors, entered the draft and recently signed with an agent to forgo his
final two years at Bradley after a strong showing in the NCAA Tournament. In
a second round upset over Pittsburgh, O’Bryant posted a career-high 28
points to lead the 13th-seeded Braves past the fifth-seeded Panthers and into
the Sweet 16 for the first time in 51 years. In the process, O’Bryant
dominated fellow 7-footer and NBA prospect Aaron Gray and solidified himself
as one of the top centers in college basketball.

On the heels of his recent success, O’Bryant decided to enter the draft now
rather than return to Bradley for his junior year.

“There’s a lot of people saying, ‘This is his best chance,’” O’Bryant,
who celebrated his 20th birthday on Tuesday, said. “There’s a lot of people

chance.”

The Sixers also took a look at a pair of foreign players in Oleksiy Pecherov

playing professionally in France, is a polished 7-footer that, in a
traditional European sense, can shoot the ball from the outside.

Even though he felt the workout was a success, King did offer criticism to

“These guys, they want to score. A lot of them say: ‘I can shoot the ball,

Because there are a lot of guys that can score that can’t guard people in
this league. Especially as a big guy, because you are going to be guarding
some tough opponents. You can’t let a guy catch it on the block.”

While King is aiming to bolster the Sixers front line, he will not do it at
the expense of passing on a guard who happens to be a better player.

“Everybody is looking for big guys,” King said. “You watch Shaq play, or
you watch different big guys play, everybody figures you can never have
