The 76ers consider fourth-year swingman Andre Iguodala a budding star, and
apparently others in high basketball positions agree.
A source confirmed yesterday that Iguodala has been invited by U.S. senior
national team managing director Jerry Colangelo to join a group of young
players to scrimmage the senior national team before it competes in the FIBA
Americas Championship.
Iguodala accepted the invitation and will be in Las Vegas from Aug. 13 to 21,
working out with the national team.
The FIBA Americas Championship is scheduled for Aug. 22 to Sept. 2 in
Las Vegas, and the U.S. senior national team is set to begin practice Aug. 15.
The top two finishers in the 10-team FIBA Americas Championship will earn
qualifying spots for the 2008 Olympics.
This will give Iguodala a chance to have an early audition for a spot on the
2012 Olympic team. Last season, he averaged 18.2 points, 5.7 assists
and 5.7 rebounds for the Sixers.
Also, the Sixers confirmed that conversations between team officials and
Iguodala's agent, Rob Pelinka, about a contract extension are taking place.
Billy King, the 76ers' president and general manager, called Pelinka on
July 1, the first day teams were able to begin negotiations with free agents.
Iguodala is set to make $2.8 million this season, but he can sign an extension
between now and Oct. 31 that would take effect for the 2008-2009 season. If
an extension isn't reached, the two sides wouldn't be able to resume
negotiations until next July.
A player of Iguodala's standing could earn as much as 25 percent of the salary
cap in the first year of the extension. A source familiar with the figures
being discussed said that a maximum contract would be between $13 million and
$14 million the first year. The deal could be for up to five years, with
increases of as much as 10.5 percent each year.
