The team came in from all over, with a majority flying in today from Philadelphia, including Head Coach Maurice Cheeks, Director of Player Personnel Courtney Witte, Assistant Coach Bernard Smith, Executive Advisor Sonny Hill, Edin Bavcic, Pat Carroll, Dawan Robinson, Jawann McClellan and members of the team's support staff. Bavcic arrived with stitches and gauze in the top of his head from what he said was an errant elbow (Assistant Trainer Scott Faust removed the gauze upon arrival in Las Vegas). The team arrived in Vegas at approximately 1:30pm PDT after a very turbulent flight. What greeted them upon arrival was a temperature that hit 102 degrees ... and got up to 106 degrees two hours into the trip (the forecast for Monday: 110 degrees). The first celebrity sighting of the trip came while waiting for the team bus, as Ultimate Fighting Championship competitor and former champion Chuck Liddell was in the lobby at The Palms, gladly greeting fans and signing autographs. Coach Cheeks pulled the entire team and staff into the locker room at Spring Valley H.S. and after everyone briefly introduced themselves, he talked to the guys about the importance of this opportunity, keeping their priorities in order while in Las Vegas and explaining the two main rules: Be on time and get to know Equipment Manager Scotty Rego. Coach John Loyer said that his goals were to have this squad "Play Hard, Play Together and Play Smart" throughout the next seven days and through the Summer League games. The first practice of the mini-camp was one that Coach Loyer said was designed for guys to "get their legs under them" after a day of flying, which mainly consisted of shooting drills and installing the first two offensive sets. It was basically a non-contact practice that was being used to get the guys ready for Monday morning's practice. Afer closing the on-court activity with wind sprints the width of the court, Jason Smith nailed a three-pointer that concluded practice for the night.
