Iguodala named first-time all-star

PHILADELPHIA — Andre Iguodala tried to downplay the possibility of becoming
a first-time NBA all-star.
I think it’d be a good experience, but it won’t be a heartbreaker or bomb
that dropped on me (if I don’t make it),” Iguodala said seven hours before
the announcement Thursday night. “Hopefully, we get good news, but there won
’t be any bad news.”
Iguodala and the 76ers indeed received good news when the Eastern Conference
coaches made him one of seven reserves picked to the team.
The phone is blowing up,” Iguodala tweeted. “Thanks for the love. Truly a
blessing.”
Iguodala, who started for the USA team that won the 2010 FIBA World
Championships, is averaging 13.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.8
steals for the Atlantic Division-leading Sixers.
I could not be more proud of Andre Iguodala for being recognized as an
all-star,” Sixers coach Doug Collins said in a release. “Andre has meant so
much to the success of our team this season. He is one of the most talented,
unselfish players that I have ever had the opportunity to coach.”
Iguodala, an eighth-year pro, will come off the bench behind starting
forwards LeBron James of the Heat and Carmelo Anthony from the Knicks. Other
forwards on the 12-man roster are the Heat’s Chris Bosh, the Celtics’ Paul
Pierce and the Bulls’ Luol Deng.
The Hawks’ Josh Smith and the Pacers’ Danny Granger were among the forwards
not to hear their names called.
Collins said he got “4-5 text messages from (coaches) who told me they voted
for ‘Dre.”
We feel ‘Dre’s one of the best all-around forwards in the game,” said
Collins, who was a four-time all-star as a Sixer in the 1970s.
The Sixers’ 18-8 record — they were 18-7 when coaches had to cast their
ballots — may have helped Iguodala’s cause.
I’m just hoping and praying that history holds form,” Collins said
earlier Thursday. “Usually, the coaches say, ‘We’ve got to take a look at
that (winning) team. Somebody’s got to be there representing Philadelphia.'“
Iguodala will be the first Sixer to play in the NBA All-Star Game since Allen
Iverson in 2006. Iverson was picked to start in 2010, but didn’t go due to
family and healthy concerns.
The only other current Sixer with all-star experience is Elton Brand, who
went in 2002 and ‘06 with the Clippers.
Collins thought reserve guard Lou Williams, the team’s leading scorer at
15.7 points, had an outside shot, but Williams wasn’t selected.
The game is set for Feb. 26 in Orlando.
Second-year pro Evan Turner will take part in the Feb. 24 rookie/sophomore
challenge.
Injury update
Center Spencer Hawes, who has missed 11 of the last 13 games with a strained
left Achilles and strained lower back, is listed as a game-time decision
Friday against Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and the Clippers.
Brand admitted his sprained right thumb is still bothering him and said he
wouldn’t have played in Wednesday’s 100-90 home loss to the Spurs if Hawes
had been in the lineup. He expects to start again Friday.
LA story
The 15-8 Clippers are third in the Western Conference, though losing Chauncey
Billups for the season to a torn Achilles really hurts.
Paul, who Collins called “a magician with the ball,” is having a tremendous
season, leading the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (4.41). He is also
second in steals (2.4) and third in assists (9.1).
The high-flying Griffin is 10th in scoring (21.4) and sixth in rebounds
(11.0).
