76ERS NOTES No challenge too big for Allen Posted: Wednesday, May 16, 2012 12:00 am | Updated: 6:45 am, Wed May 16, 2012. By Tom Moore Staff writer | http://tinyurl.com/76za5qe BOSTON — Lavoy Allen faced an unenviable task. Called upon to guard Kevin Garnett with 7 minutes, 46 seconds remaining in a two-point game Monday, the unflappable rookie once again rose to the occasion. Allen limited Garnett, who scored 29 points in Game 1, to four points — until Garnett hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer with the 76ers using a really small lineup (with Allen on the bench) — in an 82-81 Game 2 victory at TD Garden. “Lavoy Allen was tremendous,” Sixers coach Doug Collins said. “Lavoy tried to put some muscle on (Garnett). We made him work hard for his (15) points.” “He was great,” Boston coach Doc Rivers said of Allen. Allen, the former Temple University standout, said it was far from an easy job. “In Game 1, he got a lot of open jump shots,” Allen said. “ This game, he tried a lot to get the ball a lot in the post, so I tried to push him off the block to make him post out a little farther away from the basket.” Allen also contributed 10 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots in 30 minutes Monday. He only played more than that once in the regular season (31 minutes in the finale with four regulars resting and a playoff berth secure). Added to a 12-point, 8-rebound showing in Game 1, Allen has scored 10-plus points in both playoff meetings with the Celtics after not reaching double digits in consecutive games in 41 regular-season games. Allen has outscored Boston star Paul Pierce 22-21 on seven fewer shots (14 to 21) in the first two games of the series. (To be fair, Pierce is bothered by a sprained MCL.) “He’s definitely shown up big for us in these playoffs,” Andre Iguodala said. “He’s one of those under-the-radar guys coming out the draft — kind of like (fellow second-round picks) Paul Millsap or Carlos Boozer. “Coming out, they just fell under the radar. Then when you put them in a position to just do their job, they excel. He’s definitely giving us a boost and really helping us out.” Allen, the 50th pick in June’s draft, also hit an important — albeit somewhat fortunate — shot. With 4:04 left in a tie game and the shot clock running out, Allen took the inbounds pass from Iguodala and banked in a 22-footer. The 6-foot-9 Allen called it “definitely” the biggest shot of his career. “I didn’t hear him call glass,” Elton Brand joked. Given Brand’s struggles — difficult matchups and a sore neck have limited him to 11 points and five rebounds in 33 minutes against Boston, and he has yet to play in a fourth quarter of the two games — Allen might continue getting significant minutes, including at crunch time against a future Hall of Famer in Garnett. The 1-1 series continues with Game 3 on Wednesday night (7 on TNT) at the Wells Fargo Center. Game 4 is Friday night in Philly. “When they went to that small lineup, you’ve got to have one ‘big’ out there,” Collins said. “We felt comfortable with Lavoy.” Tom Moore, 215-345-3127; email, tmoore@phillyBurbs.com; Twitter, @tmoorepburbs -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 111.243.216.55
