LOS ANGELES — In the brief few hours the Spurs had to prepare for the
Western Conference finals after the travel ordeal that followed Game 7 in New
Orleans, coach Gregg Popovich laid out the defensive goals he believed would
produce a series victory and another trip to the NBA Finals:

In the immediate aftermath of his team's elimination Thursday in Game 5,
Popovich conceded that his team had accomplished each of those. A
high-scoring Lakers team topped 100 points only once in the series.

“If we really thought we would be able to do all that,” Popovich said, “I
would think this series would be a win for us.”

It wasn't, because the Spurs' offense never fired the way Popovich believed
it could against the Lakers.

reasons.”

Chief among them was solid defensive work by the Lakers. But the biggest key
may have been the defense the New Orleans Hornets employed against the Spurs
in the previous round.

Popovich went to a motion-based attack after losing the first two games to
the Lakers. Veteran guard Brent Barry said the Spurs were a little rusty in
the motion attack after being much more of a post-up team against the Hornets
as well as the Spurs' first-round opponents, the Phoenix Suns.

once Popovich made the switch. “We didn't know where the offense was coming
from because we had played so much off of Tim (Duncan's) double team.
Sometimes we got lost and got in our own way.

Barry's role increased game to game in the Lakers series as the Spurs looked
for ways to score. He scored 11 in Game 5, giving him 34 points — and more
than 53 minutes on the court — in the final two games of the series.

Thursday's loss wasn't the way Barry wanted things to end after he opted to
re-sign with the Spurs in March, even after they traded him to the Seattle
SuperSonics in February. The Sonics waived him, and Barry waited the
league-mandated 30 days before re-signing with the Spurs, shunning offers
from other teams.
禮拜四比賽的落敗，並不是Barry在二月被交易到西雅圖超音速，又在三月被簽回來後希望

Playing a key role off the bench in the final two games gave him a better
feeling about that decision.

“I'm very happy being part of this team and organization and what it's done
for me and my family and my career, and being part of championship teams,”
he said. “I didn't want to give that up quite so soon, so, yeah, I'm happy
