Spurs Waive Marcus Haislip

According to a Spurs press release, Marcus Haislip has been released “to
pursue opportunities outside of the NBA.”
It’s not clear whether Haislip accepted a reduced buyout from the Spurs in
order to accept a more lucrative contract elsewhere, or, for that matter, if
that contract is ready to be signed. But he obviously felt like more playing
time awaited elsewhere.

This move brings the Spurs’ roster to 14. The roster space could be used in
a variety of ways, including not at all. But theoretically San Antonio could
call up a D-League player, sign a veteran that is bought out by his current
club, or take back more players than they give up in a trade.

Haislip played sparingly, but with the return of Matt Bonner and the recent
flash of productivity from Ian Mahinmi it’s difficult to imagine a scenario
in which Hailsip would take on a bigger role with the Spurs. Come playoff
time, the Spurs will already have too many bigs than a standard postseason
rotation can accommodate.

In other words, be careful not to read anything more into this than what it
is. Haislip wanted out; the Spurs obliged his preference.
