In Matt Bonner's head, he is always open, the basket is always as wide as the
Gulf of Mexico, and every ball feels textbook-perfect leaving his hand.

Of course, what happens in the head doesn't always jibe with what happens on
the hardwood.

Bonner learned as much earlier this season as he struggled to come back from
a broken shooting hand, and came perilously close to falling out of Gregg
Popovich's plans altogether.

At one point in January, Bonner — the Spurs' most reliable 3-point shooter —
 clanged 10 straight tries from distance.

Afforded a final chance to get right — and aided by a timely injury to
Antonio McDyess — Bonner appears to have finally shaken off his mid-season
slump.

March has been his best month. In seven games, he is averaging 11.1 points

In Saturday's 118-88 victory over the Clippers, Bonner notched a team-leading

right hand Dec. 19 against Indiana.

“I've been playing with confidence and shooting with confidence since I've

Playing this way, like an oversized Steve Kerr, the 6-foot-10 Bonner stands

homestretch. With his ability to stretch the floor and pull an opposing big
man away from the basket, Bonner's presence often makes the Spurs' offense
run more smoothly.

Still, as recently as two weeks ago, there was serious question as to whether
Bonner would have any role at all going forward.

Bonner missed his first 10 3-pointers after returning Jan. 18 from a
month-long layoff and followed that with a February in which he shot 35
percent. He was perilously close to falling permanently from Popovich's

contract.

He responded with three consecutive double-digit scoring outings, throwing in
multiple 3-pointers in each.

justify continuing to play a 3-point specialist who wasn't making them.

By that measure, playing Bonner now is an easier call. So long as he is
burying shots, there will be minutes for him.

“He was playing horrible,” Popovich said, “but as he's gotten his chances,

Popovich says Bonner is again playing like he was before his injury, when he
was averaging a career-best 8.4 points per game. Bonner agrees.

Against the Clippers, that approach resulted in Bonner's third 20-point
outing of the season. His five 3-pointers were one off a season high. With
the shot clock winding down on him late in the third, Bonner even made an

Asked if he ever practices that shot, Bonner came clean.

“Only when I  play horse,” he said. “This is like the one chance of my
career to make the top ten plays.”
